Growing up Holy Saturday (Easter) was at grandma and grandpa’s house. The cousins would hunt plastic eggs outside, then we would go inside for breakfast and an egg cracking contest

(Two people each take a hard boiled egg and hit them together, whoever’s breaks is out)

it’s pretty simple: you can either induce demand for things that suck and people hate (traffic), or you can do it for things that are good (bikes, the McRib)
The latest evaluation of bike lane projects in Boston continues to show that if you build bike infrastructure, people will use it.

you should quit social media if you can.
if you can't, you should use apps that give you and old-school reverse chronological feed of posts from people you follow. yes, like bluesky.

You should quit social media for good
Platforms optimized for engagement warp our politics, erode attention, and harm our wellbeing. Here’s how I minimize time on the (anti‑)social web.

tbh the fundamental issue with public safety in america is that there are so many guns that is extremely likely that whatever unarmed public safety outfits you have will lean heavily on the ones with guns for further protection
The police should be broken up into like four forces each with different responsibilities and applicant pools.
My take as well: We need everything from "social worker who can dodge a punch" to "SWAT team" because sometimes someone's having a psychotic break in public and sometimes someone has a gun and hostages. The police being our one-size-fits-all solution is pretty stupid in that light.

Democrats seem to think the pivoting to the center makes them most electable but all it does it piss *everyone* off.

Having beliefs/a backbone and being authentic is the best way to win elections. People are fucking sick of croneyism and corporate suck ups and that is why Zohran cruised to victory

The “transit bailout“ literally includes a toll increase to support road expansion
it's really black pilling how strong the political forces are for highway capital spending. following the chicagoland transit bailout coverage it was clear "no net reduction in highway spending" was a line in the sand politicians dared not cross

NEW: Judges around the country are citing an unexpected source to free ICE detainees:

The Laken Riley Act

They're finding ICE's mass detention agenda is SO broad it could actually "nullify" the controversial law.

It still doesn't feel real, and I'm not s ure it ever will. Jonathan was a good friend, devoted husband and father and an even better public servant.

May his story be a reminder that the world is better with you in it.

Hallowe'en is just around the corner and it is one of the most dangerous days for children. Here are some safety tips:

1) Avoid hitting children with your pickup truck, SUV or other motor vehicle. It is technically against the law to harm or kill a child with your vehicle and you could be charged.

One thought I have is that posting your equity as collateral for a loan should be a taxable event (realizing the income and stepping up the basis). I think it makes sense both morally and legally: you’re converting stocks to cash to fund living expenses, it’s almost economically equivalent to a sale
