This sort of prejudice against Irish is exhausting from The Economist. It's not the first time. The Irish language is no more or less "unfathomable" than French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Portuguese etc. All languages are "fathomable" when you take the effort to learn them. Cc @shashj.bsky.social

'Roughly 700 Marines have been ordered to deploy to Los Angeles to protect federal buildings and officials amid mounting immigration protests there, U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, announced on Monday.'

A quick thread of charts showing how Trump’s economic agenda is going so far:

1) US consumers are reacting very very negatively.

These are the worst ratings for any US government’s economic policy since records began.

The way things are going in the US, the rest of the world have to become imaginative about the scenarios that would best safeguard their interests. Today I ask if the world could decouple from US trade. For most countries, the answer is yes, at a significant but bearable cost. on.ft.com/41eWTKF

Being a person with deadly, incurable cancer who is nonetheless still alive for an indefinite timeframe gives me an interesting metaphor that helps me deal with things like large-scale corruption in government or commerce.

Bear with me for a second while I try to explain.

1/ Ok, so instead of just making jokes about the EU Reset, I wanted to do a very simplified thread on:
- what the actual problem is Keir Starmer is trying to solve;
- the options on the table; and
- why this shit is hard.

This will be very long. I'm sorry.

Let's get wonky.

Thinking more about this. So far every Trump pick has been a real piece of work — incompetent, corrupt and/or sexual abuser. This isn't because Trump is a bad judge of character, it's because that's what he wants — incompetence and moral turpitude guarantee loyalty 1/
