One of many great inspiring scenes, very timely
LASZLO: Play “La Marseillaise.” Play it!
I feel like I know my Bluesky audience pretty well, but just in case some of you have (gasp!) never seen Casablanca and therefore never had the heartsplitting experience of watching a bunch of real life European refugees stand up and drown out fake Nazis by singing the Marseillaise go fix that soon.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world.

Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

I do think the nyt headline did not match the story, and I am starting to be concerned about that. Sounds like a rapid negotiation and both sides gave a bit.
Let me get this straight. Petro calls for dignified transit. Trump threatens tariffs. Petro smacks Trump in a post threatening his own higher tariffs. And Trump agrees to what Petro asked for. And yet NYT is calling this *Petro* backing down?

A federal court has declared that warrantless searches of US person’s communications collected for national security purposes is unconstitutional. Now it’s our job to make sure Congress knows that when they renew this law in a little over a year.

In a landmark ruling, a federal district court held that backdoor searches of databases full of Americans’ private communications collected under Section 702 ordinarily require a warrant. Congress sho...

This is such an interesting thread about something I knew nothing about-
I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012.

Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place.

A thread.

And that’s what makes a musician of any level a treasure.
People with beating hearts and souls make music.
Software and AI make sounds.
Wtf
Beautiful stuff: "It’s not really enjoyable to make music now… it takes a lot of time, it takes a lot of practice, you have to get really good at an instrument... I think the majority of people don’t enjoy the majority of time they spend making music."

"What if a grp of students at a Philly high school that never had its own library created one from scratch?" Stories like this are always 🥰, but they remind us (as the article notes) of systemic problems: the Philly School District has TWO full-time certified school librarians across 216 schools! 🎁
Here’s how some Philly high school students built a library from scratch. ‘Kids just kept coming, renewing books.’
“We all grew up without a library,” one KHSA senior said. “That had an effect on a lot of kids."

While some analysis from someone respected is still ok for me, I think this mindset pretty much nails a good balance between staying knowledgable and avoiding unnecessary/ destructive/ unproductive worry-
A way I'm coping is largely ignoring news stories focusing on palace intrigue, analysis, and predictions, which is a huge percentage of politics news. It's faster and less stressful to read the facts about some event or law and draw my own conclusions
It seems obvious that the mainstream media has learned absolutely no lessons from covering the first Trump Administration, and is completely unprepared to cover the second Trump Administration.

It’s going to be a fucking exhausting four years.

This is a thoughtful thread-
1/ RE Meta's decision to abandon fact-checking (and follow the lead of other platforms taking a similar hands-off approach), it's not great. But we have seen this movie before in media history and it's probably more instructive to anticipate what this moment creates. ...

Yes: ‘Learning how to learn, IMO, is a critical life skill.’
Yet, colleges seem to be on the hook for - and emphasize - immediate outcome (‘x% of grads employed or full time grad students…’)
And- cannot trade schools also help individuals learn how to learn?
I think the higher ed model is broken.
Should we continue to encourage kids to go to college ? Or push them to take up a trade ?

I believe in college. Learning how to learn, IMO, is a critical life skill. Being exposed to people of different backgrounds, makes yiu wiser

Qualifier- it should be a school you can afford.

Interesting/ valuable perspective-
Most businesspeople are always going to prefer Republicans because of low taxes, but the post-2012 effort to *deliberately stigmatize center-left business people* was a disaster.

Eight years ago, a budding scientist gave a commercial airline pilot a gift that would link the two for life.

Since then, they'd met in person and linked up on social media. But when she boarded a flight a week ago, she didn't expect to see him.

Then an announcement came over the PA system.
