What we're seeing is exactly what we saw in the late 1940s, the late 1960s and the mid- to late 1970s: a concerted and hysterical campaign to delegitimise a Labour government, and indeed the very idea of Labour governments at all.

Slightly confused that it's the Director-General of the BBC, but what do I know?

Fascinating substack read here…
If populism is (as this argues) a rebellion against System 2 thinking—which requires symbols and remains frustratingly hard for most of us—it seems we’re stuck with it forever.

If only we could make some kind of, idk, cognitive prosthesis for symbolic reasoning? Yeah, never mind. Sounds hard. +
Populism fast and slow
It is natural that a person who is both concerned by the rise of right-wing populism and possessed of a bookish disposition might turn to the academic political science literature in search of a bette...

Kind of remarkable that for all UK broadcast media's obsession with American politics it has produced relatively little on the ground coverage of the spiralling situation in Chicago
A friend of mine in Chicago just shared a video on IG of an ICE operation near her house. The operation happened just minutes before the neighborhood Halloween parade. ICE used tear gas and multiple parents had to wash their kids' (including toddlers) eyes out.

The most interesting vote of the night imho and one that foretells a potential apocalypse in the suburbs of the south-east for the Conservatives. More liberal Tories go LD, more reactionary ones go to Reform.
Camberley West (Surrey) Council By-Election Result:

🔶 LDM: 49.5% (+16.6)
➡️ RFM: 25.9% (New)
🌳 CON: 20.4% (-28.8)
🌹 LAB: 4.3% (-11.4)

No WPB (-2.3) as previous.

Liberal Democrat GAIN from Conservative.
