Just your daily reminder that the occurrence of frequent uncontained measles outbreaks in a country is not a flex, it is a marker of under development and a failed public health system.

Naming your ChatGPT is like naming your copy of Microsoft Word. "This is Barbara, my writing assistant." Truly one of the more bizarre aspects of this dystopian timeline.

Remember the recent middle-of-the-night apartment building raid where children were dragged outside naked & zip-tied in the street while black & Latino residents were _sorted by race_ and piled into separate vans while their apartments were ransacked & robbed? That raid? So it resulted in 0 arrests.

5pm on November 1: let’s go for a walk, it’s still light out!

5pm on November 2: an early darkness blankets the land. Fallow fields lay bone-bleached by moonlight. The last memories of summer fade into oblivion. The last echoes of hope lapse into baleful silence.

Medicare for All would save $450B a year.

Every dollar spent on food stamps generates $1.50-$1.80 in economic activity.

Each dollar going to low-wage workers adds $1.20 to the economy overall.

It’s not about what this country can or can’t afford.

It’s about priorities.

America right now is an airplane that the crew is actively trying to dismantle mid-flight while at least half the passengers are sitting bare-knuckled just hoping we somehow eke out a survivable landing. (The other half are, inexplicably, rooting for the dismantling.)

1. More Americans work at the Cheesecake Factory than in the entire coal industry, and that won't change. It's because of automation, not snooty libs.

2. Coal energy is now more expensive than wind and solar.

3. So this means: higher energy prices, more pollution, no jobs benefit. Genius!
Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."

When future generations study the decline of the United States as a world power, private equity firms will be at the top of the list. Their unchecked greed is literally killing people. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
Death rates rose in hospital ERs after private equity firms took over, study finds
The increased deaths in emergency departments at private equity-owned hospitals are most likely the result of reduced staffing levels, researchers say.

it's also really important to spread the "this is illegal" message as far as you can because the majority of people are not exposed to it! most people do not even know the government is doing the illegal thing it's doing, let alone that it's illegal. when they learn about it they get mad!
I know it's frustrating when lawyers point out when something the administration is doing is not legal. But responding with "the law doesn't matter anymore" is really unhelpful and defeatist. Clarifying the law is important because it reminds us not to comply in advance and to resist and take action

Every once in a while I tell people from other countries about how the health insurance system works in the US and they are aghast. Yesterday a guy straight up didn’t believe me when I said people can die because of not being able to afford medicine. He was sure I meant in the distant past.

My big problem with the phrase “granola fascism” is that granola is delicious as hell, granola does not deserve to be catching strays like this. “Raw milk fascism” is more appropriate. Thank you.

DOD using Grok is burying the lede.

This is about funnelling government money to X. Which is in deep financial shit right now.
The US Defense Department is going to start using Elon Musk’s GROK under a new contract.

GROK will also be available for other government agencies.

The Defense Department’s contact with GROK is said to have a ceiling of $200 million.
