New in PN: @mattgertz.bsky.social on the Orbanization of the press

"Everyone just accepts that of course the FCC will only allow a merger if it goes to a person that Trump wants to own it. That’s a very precipitous decline in our broad public assumptions of how govt power is supposed to be wielded"
The Orbanization of the American press
"The really unnerving thing is Trump using state power to influence who a company gets sold to," Matt Gertz tells us.

The tariff revenue is irrelevant for any checks the government sends out. It would just be a random stimulus plan funded by more borrowing.

Deadwood circa 1876 & a few years after. Note the huge hole being dug in the street in the 1st pic. Despite its primitive look, in 1878 Deadwood was the 1st US town to have citywide phone service (with a line directly to the White House). There was only 1 phone available though.

Hey Megyn Kelly,

14-year-old Eloise would like a word:

“If my voice makes you uncomfortable, good…
because the minute adults start defending predators by defending the age of a child, you’re not protecting the truth, you’re protecting the predator.”

Sound up! 🔥🔊

incredible that these guys have a massive hard on for a country that, if it were a state, would rank behind kansas in terms of wealth and which would be a total backwater if it weren’t economically integrated with more functional countries

Trump says "bad, sick" Democrats could have doctored the Epstein files to make him look bad. Great logic by Cheetolini. He's suggesting the Dems framed him, but forgot to release the dirt, let him win the election, and then quietly turned over the Epstein files to him.
Trump's new line on the Epstein files is that they were probably doctored by Democrats to make him look bad

We’re at war with Iran because Trump hated our first Black president, who had already negotiated and signed a deal to keep Iran’s ability to build nuclear weapons in check, with monitoring and verification.

Vance: I empathize with Americans who are exhausted after 25 years of foreign entanglements in the Middle East. I understand the concern, but the difference is that back then we had dumb presidents

Proponents of STEM as a field always frame it as pure and objective, its advances driven only by the scientific method and eventually diffusing into society by way of the economy and medicine.

But science, and tech especially, can never be dissociated from the politics of the society it bathes in.

When you answer the prompts on a state health website, it might be quietly sending your answers to social media companies like LinkedIn and Snapchat. We investigated who’s doing that:
We caught 4 more states sharing personal health data with Big Tech – The Markup
Healthcare exchanges in Nevada, Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island shared users’ sensitive health data with companies like Google and LinkedIn

Analysis | Donald Trump is a new kind of Republican. Yes, his agenda includes Middle East invasions, sexual culture wars, throwing people off their healthcare, and exploding the debt with handouts to the ultra-rich. But he also sells his own crypto, bibles, and cell phone service.

Among non-evangelicals, at least, I'd bet a great predictor of whether you voted for Trump is how you felt about "Breaking Bad". If you thought Walter White was awesome and Skyler was a joykill, I would bet lots of money on how you voted.

Senator Padilla was driven violently to his knees–as if made to kneel before the authority of the executive–because the administration called his questions “disrespectful”.

This should offend not just the other 99 Senators. It should offend the conscience of this country.
