This is not the worst book we've ever read but it is the meanest episode we've ever done.
Episode 46: Sapiens

It's an ambitious goal to write the entire history of humanity in just 400 pages. It's even more ambitious to do it without reading any research.

We partnered with @pablo.show to investigate Riley Gaines' rise to MAGA stardom. @msjpauly.bsky.social dug up docs that reveal the right-wing funders behind her ascent and spoke to puzzled teammates who wonder what happened to her.

(this is a supportive QT) I have been getting these messages for 20+ years, and in last 2-3 years, they have moved from "innocent keen slight nutter" to "do not let this guy within 1000 ft of schools or zoos." People have become deranged with AI and an utter lack of mental health care.
I am by no means a prominent public intellectual, but my inbox is increasingly filled with messages from people who have been convinced by sycophantic chatbots that they have discovered revolutionary theories that entirely upend our scientific understanding of the universe.

Grok Claims Elon Musk Is More Athletic Than LeBron James -- and the World's Greatest Lover

finding out that sycophancy doesn't trigger everyone's fight or flight response might be among the worst discoveries of the 2020s for me, and trust me it has stiff competition.
In a world in which people with too much power and influence desperately need to be told and to understand when they are wrong, we are suddenly all inescapably drowning in sycophancy machines.

What’s the most significant advice you received from a teacher?

I had a Geology prof who always said “have strong opinions, loosely held”

Be passionate, assess alternatives with conviction, take sides. But don’t fall so in love with your opinions that you can’t change them with better data.

West Bank: After nine months of Israeli military operations, refugee camps are 'uninhabitable'
The destruction of buildings, water pipes and the electrical system by the Israeli army has made it impossible for the 30,000 forcibly displaced Palestinians to return to normal daily life.

This, on top of environmental collapse, is why you should refuse AI. Refuse it because it makes the world worse for everyone else except the oligarchy. Refuse it because it destroys your ability to think and make decisions, and refuse it because it creates mistrust in almost everything it touches.

When AI is used to create images they do it with the full knowledge and intent on suppressing possibility. That's what you lose when you don't have human agency. You get someone else in charge of narratives that predispose others towards you before you even meet them.

It’s also a direct penalty for driving a sedan or station wagon when every third car is an SUV blasting its headlights at you at the exact height of your forehead
Driving back home from the post office, it seemed like every third car had brights on. Cannons of light blasting into my retinas. These are standard now! People tell me I should start wearing yellow-tinted glasses at night to cut glare. But should *I* be the one that has to adjust?
I wish we, like, regulated shit nowadays. Between car bloat, blinding headlines, and neighbourhoods packed with rental suites but no on-property parking, driving is an absolute nightmare now.

I like the citizen science aspect of this. People state a hypothesis (“Regardless of the facts Grok will claim Elon Musk is superior to everyone else relative to any metric users specify”) and then proceed to test said hypothesis. Choosing absurd examples is excellent Bayesian practice in this case!

Finally, I know of at least one case where the letter writer, deep into an episode of AI-induced psychosis, asked the LLM why scientists were not responding. The machine suggested that perhaps the scientists were trying to steal his discovery.

This will get someone killed sooner or later.

The letter writers are being convinced by LLMs that they have made monumental discoveries that they don't remotely begin to understand, not even to the point of being able to explain for themselves what they think they have found.

Of course I've received crank letters for decades. But there's a decided shift in the frequency and the tenor of what is arriving now. The LLM-induced ones are immediately recognizable as such.
