It's been obvious for years that many social media accounts are foreign trolls. The tragedy has been the utter complacency about it. All an enemy had to do was tinkle a little bell and the dumb doggies would bark away at each other. Why bother with a nuclear arsenal?

How have Labour watched the Tories spend 2-3 years parroting Farage then lose an election badly and conclude a similar strategy is the best course of action?

I’m raising money for Groveland Emergency Food Shelf, a South Minneapolis nonprofit that provides emergency groceries for those in need. They’re currently struggling to keep up with demand, and they’re getting their first $16k in donations matched.

I’ve got $50 on it! Can anyone match me?

When we're on the other side of this, there will obviously be prosecutions.

Sure, convict the leadership. But absolutely bury the rank and file who participated. Making people fear complicity is how we make sure this never happens again, regardless of who's in charge.

It feels like a significant amount of quality news outlets are behind paywalls while absolutely none of the inflammatory right-wing ones are and in an age of overwhelming misinformation combined with increasingly poor media literacy I just have… no idea what we’re supposed to do about that.

When Trump was sworn in, Elon Musk's corporations were under more than 32 investigations conducted by at least 11 federal agencies.

Most of the cases are now closed or likely to be closed soon, and the federal agencies are being defanged by DOGE.

Funny how that works, huh?

This👇 Calling these attacks “budget cuts” is like cutting off your leg and saying you’re trying to lose weight.
Really wish people would stop talking about the problem with Science under Trump as “budget cuts”.

No. Budgets are set deliberatively by elected members of congress. Budgets haven’t been cut.

What’s happening are *purges* and *censorship*.

Okay somehow it's Friday and somehow we made it (congrats!) 🤯

To make the doomscroll easier, here's a thread of all the wild stuff we learned this week, starting with @brbarrett.bsky.social's analysis on why DOGE *is* the deep state (and Elon Musk's extended universe.)
DOGE Is the Deep State
A shadowy group of unelected figures reshaping the federal government to their own benefit from the inside? Sounds familiar!

The DOGE Takeover Is Worse Than You Think
What’s happening to the US government right now is bad. What comes next is worse.

DOGE's new AI, built to scan federal workers' emails to see if they get to keep their jobs, is the latest in a number of AI schemes from Musk.

We might scoff at how dumb these ideas are, but the truth is, they're not even supposed to work. They're built to eliminate accountability.
What's really behind Elon Musk and DOGE's AI schemes
DOGE is feeding workers' emails into an AI to decide if they should keep their jobs. It's a cruel joke in the service of something much worse.

Expect to see a lot more of this 👇 in the coming months & years.

If Europe is at least pretending to have a serious conversation about life without a US security guarantee, then the same conversation has to be had about tech dependence on the US.

Whether anything will happen is another matter.
It is very hard to accept, but it is no longer safe to move EU governments & societies to US clouds. Not only is it dangerous to do so, it is also likely flat out illegal in the near feature. We're trading convenience for utter dependence on a mad king. It should stop.
