I did this in both of my classes this semester. It was super successful. The students had to ask an LLM about a subject they already knew well, like their favorite musician, movie, sports team, or something else they had previously researched.

Desperate for CA to take MA’s millionaire tax and implement our own to lower the cost of UCs/CSUs for residents.
Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

Friendly reminder that dishwashers made after 1995 or so are so water and energy efficient that even if you ran them twice fully loaded it would still use less water than handwashing the same load.

So many "green" things feel like sacrifices. Dishwashers are not one of them.

Guaranteeing affordable prices for essentials addresses inequality without dividing society. Free buses or childcare are universal.

They benefit everyone and create solidarity across income, race, and religion — a unifying rather than exclusionary economic agenda.

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

The rage I feel at the thought of people ignoring Patsy Rodenburg.

Her technique is how I was able to do 8 shows a week of Shakespeare with no mics. I would give anything to learn from her.
Yes & no. Note the decline in vocal teaching - Patsy Rodenburg, the best voice teacher alive, quit Guildhall bc students didn’t want to do vocal work & her subordinates slacked bc they figured everyone goes to Netflix anyway. In Britain it’s theoretically possible to work in the theatre a lot -
pebbles in their mouths every one!!!!! this is why UK actors have an edge by the way. they teach them how to say words over there

It was a crazy busy in the bookshop today. I took almost four times what I'd expect to take on a normal Weds. I guess the ramp-up to Christmas has started, which is good news. Independent bookshops make around a third of their yearly income over the seasonal period, so remember to shop local!

If you have a predatory history, you shouldn’t be in a position of power.
I know that at this point it's a subplot in the Epstein files drama, but I feel compelled to point out, once again, that Larry Summers HAS NO BUSINESS teaching students at ANY university ever again!

My latest cries into the abyss, in @thenation.com

Why Is Larry Summers Still Employed?
The revelations about the economist’s attempts to pressure a women into a “relationship”—with guidance from Jeffrey Epstein—should finally disqualify him from teaching students.

A necessary spin off of the Magic Tree House series.
I wanna invent time travel and then require every high school student to take a class called "All The Shit We Fixed Before You Got Here" where they tour smog-filled US cities, polio wards, pre-vaccine hospitals, buildings with no safety regulations, kids working in mines, etc.

Larry Summers needs to retreat from teaching life too.
as a person of political, financial or academic importance. Epstein ran with a large crowd, particularly men, who were very flawed.

2) Larry Summers won’t be the only person who retreats from public life.

3) Do not expect these documents to suddenly result in a massive set of new criminal

Texas' abortion ban has killed yet another woman. Here's exactly what the anti-abortion response will be:

They’ll claim doctors were legally allowed to “intervene” or “treat” Tierra Walker with "care." They won't say she could have had an abortion because they don’t believe in life-saving abortions
