much of this stems from a gross misunderstanding of writing as “the act of sitting down to write”. writing is the 10,000 other things that you do before you sit down. it is light cast through a window hitting the far wall, it is the memory of that time you saw that one bird, it is the act of living

so disappointing how many ppl I see preemptively convincing themselves they can't learn a thing w/o giving it a real effort over time bc they think natural aptitude is the defining factor of skill acquisition. the only diff btwn them & the ppl who can do the thing is that the latter just kept trying

Crab-like creatures are famed for having evolved five times in evolutionary history. But anteaters have evolved at least 12 times--in half the evolutionary span. Cool story by @jakebuehler.bsky.social for @science.org

it's humbling to do a skill we're not trained for, doesn't come naturally to us, likely won't ever be pro in. deepens our respect for and the need for other people. part of why I find helping people make hobby games healthy is they stray from their comfortable core lane more than pro settings let us

@sharkeatsman.bsky.social@joshhamrick.bsky.social@klawdd.bsky.social Howdy! Yesterday I bashed Fighting Lion into Doom2 & thought y'all'd like to see it. Klawdd's talk on game feel was inspiring. (Not sure yet if Zdoom can handle friction on bounces.) Thanks for all the fun memories!

among the things we apparently need to do a better job of going forward - as a society, it seems - is communicating the basic conceit of what learning is and why we value it. a problem that we in higher ed share with our K-12 colleagues

I gotta say I find a lot of AI discourse around higher ed very confusing. "if ChatGPT can write your essays is college even worth it?" did people think math teachers were assigning problem sets because *they* couldn't figure out the answers?

A friend showed me a demo for a rhythm beat-em-up game called "Dead as Disco" that lets you import your own music (with adjustable game speed to suit the BPM)!
So naturally as an FFXIV player, there was only one option:
