Q: Do you think it would've been fitting to lower the flags to half staff when Melissa Hortman, the Minnesota House Speaker, was gunned down by an assassin?

Horrific political assassinations took place in America, & we’ve totally erased it from the National Conversation™️ because they happened in the Midwest instead of Manhattan & we’re not a serious country. Incredibly depressing on so many deep, pathetic levels. May their memories be a blessing.
This broke me from the first paragraph

"For Melissa Hortman’s last day at work, they draped her coffin with pink flowers and filled the cold marble under the Minnesota Capitol dome with the green and growing things that she loved."

Thank you, @stribrooks.bsky.social
Brooks: Minnesota’s greatest honor for a family’s great loss
Former President Joe Biden paid his respects in person, and mourners waited in long lines to honor Melissa and Mark Hortman, and their dog Gilbert, as they lay in state at the Capitol.

Permit me to endorse this sentiment wholeheartedly
I think you should not be a historian or a professor if looking at your books makes you feel like this.
I’m sometimes frustrated, sometimes confused but always excited and pleased I have my books.
They bring me connection, stimulation and joy.
If I was a history professor at Princeton I would simply not advertise that I don't know what reading is.

You might also notice how he adds “if they have any” to “the ability to consult legal rights”.

And I can’t help but wonder if the “ability for food” phrasing is hinting that food will not be universally provided to all detainees.

Meredith has always been a G, but it's still exceptionally weird and very refreshing hearing from a tech exec who can see through all of this AI bullshit for what it is at its foundation: a backdoor surveillance tool.
Worth a watch:

I urge the world: don’t forget the people of #Sudan.

Ongoing fighting has displaced more people than in any other crisis.

Health facilities are out of service or providing limited care.

Diseases are spreading fast.

We need urgent funding.

We need access to make sure people receive health care.
