Good literary translation requires understanding (language, culture, genre--on both sides of the translation) and an ability to write well. "AI" can't do that. There are no shortcuts. Treat your work and foreign language readers with the respect they deserve. You won't fool anyone with this.

I know there's a lot going on, but it should be getting more attention that the governor of Illinois just credibly accused Texas of planning to literally invade his state.

I unpack how profoundly alarming this is @theunpopulist.net:
Trump’s Leaked Plan to Deploy the Texas National Guard Against Illinois Will Tear Apart the Union
If it goes forward, it will plunge the country into an unprecedented constitutional crisis

In the Trump era, one party has gotten noticeably worse.

A lot of where we are right now is the product of major institutions not updating their worldview, but continuing with priors that don’t hold anymore, if they ever did.

Just finished the phenomenal "The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire" by @chriskempshall.bsky.social and I really wish there were more books that hit this niche for me: "non-fiction" about fictional sci-fi universes.

Children are being snatched by agents of the state, but sure six trans children wanting to play sports is the bigger issue.
My high school age son has a classmate just seized by ICE and she is now in a cell in Louisiana, her phone seized. This is High School in the USA in 2025. More Au Revoir Les Enfants than Ferris Bueller. School and community response already in motion.

This is Soviet-style tyranny. The state empowers the worst bullies you know. They’re usually the quickest to avail themselves of the arbitrary power that the state passes down.
Relative of a family friend got swept up by ICE. The reason? He had a disagreement with his manager. Manager called ICE. ICE picked him up in front of the entire undocumented staff, as a fucking warning.

And Independent Bookstore Day is over! I managed to finish the crawl! 20 stores spread across the district. I met some people, had good conversations, walked A TON, and most importantly made off with a haul of books I'm excited for. Thanks to anyone who followed along! Patronize local bookstores!

JD Vance asks: What would I do with the millions and millions of illegals?

I would legalize them. I would thank them for choosing the United States. They’ve just bet their lives on us, and I’d try to make that a winning bet.

/8 In what meaningful way is Israel an ally of the United States, as Israel is presently led?

If a country demands and encourages that secret police sweep up students from the street for writing critical op-eds, how is that country an ally and not an enemy to our basic values?

There's a small contingent of people online who get angry when you say this but:
Wikipedia is unquestionably the most successful utopian project of the internet age, and its destruction would be a crime against humanity
Wikipedia is rolling out anonymity features piloted in countries with authoritarian governments in the US & is making a change to not show editor IP addresses in response to a global "increase in threats" from Elon Musk, Heritage Foundation, and governments

This is issue is not open. The history is plain. The text is straightforward. There is an unbroken tradition with precedent favoring the rule of birthright citizenship. A random amicus brief? Who cares. Legitimizing bad history is stupid. Giving credibility to off the wall arguments is unnecessary.
Judge Sorkin, unlike other judges that have held that T47's EO is unconstitutional, is taking his time to carefully evaluate the issue. Quite a few briefs have been filed in that case. Smart move by Judge Sorkin to give very serious consideration to the arguments in support of the EO.

I have not become completely numb; I can still be shocked by some depths of depraved sadism inflicted by this collection of despicable thugs, giggling sociopaths, and dead-eyed apparatchiks. May their days be short and frustrated.
New — The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) was told this week by DOJ that they'd lose their funding if the org didn't remove any mentions of LGBTQIA+ issues from their public materials, I've learned. Staff were told they need to deadname trans kids in their reports to comply.

i think that people making the argument that my fellow citizens are not citizens should get punched in the teeth and if they repeat the argument they should get punched until they stop
My key point here is not substantive. I find Trump's order cruel & terrible, but whether it is constitutional is a separate, crucial question. Left-leaning people like me should assume good faith by those suggesting the order is constitutional & engage with their arguments.

One of the many frustrating things about American politics is that whenever the Dems are in power the debt/deficit becomes a major five alarm fire that they have no choice but to address. And yet for some reason this problem disappears when the Rs are in power. 1/
