The Saltwater Oyster Depot, in the town of Inverness in West Marin, is closing over "hundreds of thousands of dollars" of unpaid sales taxes.

Additionally, the story has this *very grim* note about housing in Marin.

Prior to Covid, 1/3rd(!) of the restaurant's employees lived in their cars.

You have to almost admire the sheer dedication to incompetence this administration has, to go from accusing 643 counties and cities of having "sanctuary policies" to... 22.

A casual 97% drop between lists; indicative of seriously rigorous vetting and careful, fact-based policy-making.
Wow, after their initial sanctuary jurisdiction list drew widespread criticism & was pulled down within days, the admin has published ANOTHER sanctuary jurisdiction list.

First list by DHS: 14 states, 415 counties & 227 cities

New list by DOJ: 13 states, 4 counties & 18 cities

We could have had cancer vaccines, and instead the United States will contribute nothing whatsoever to mRNA research, condemning millions of people worldwide to unnecessary illness and death

We’ve discovered a literal miracle with almost unlimited potential and it’s being scrapped for *no reason whatsoever*. This isn’t even nihilism, it’s outright worship of death and human suffering.
"The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today announced the beginning of a coordinated wind-down of its mRNA vaccine development activities...."

Every reputable expert I know considers mRNA vaccine technology to be one of the most revolutionary advances in medicine in our lifetimes. Its inventors won the Nobel Prize in 2023. Shutting it down now is pointless self-harm to humanity.
Release from HHS: HHS will wind down its development of the mRNA vaccine development activities under the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

I believe one of the new mRNA vaccines was expected to treat colon cancer, and another had the potential to keep pancreatic cancer from recurring. That’s what they’re taking away.

the voting rights act is, in its entirety, obviously constitutional under the 15th amendment, which gives congress broad and proactive authority to stop racial discrimination in voting. and you know it is obviously constitutional because roberts has had to invent entire new doctrines to gut it.
The Supreme Court knocked down one of the two pillars of the Voting Rights Act in 2013 in the Shelby County case. It has now gone out of its way to consider whether it should knock down the other, by rescheduling arguments in a case it could have resolved in June under existing precedent.

The International Residential Code (1&2 family), which controls townhomes, is much lower cost than International Building Code, which controls multifamily.

This isn’t true globally - @stephenjacobsmith.com’s shows building costs per unit decrease with density everywhere but US/Can.

American planners used building codes to make stacked flats and apartments costly, complex, and impossible to build. They wanted to socially engineer us into car dependent suburbs and it worked

It’s actually for more economically and environmentally sustainable to urbanize our unurban cities where we already have infrastructure and the demand to live there.
I am sympathetic to the techno-optimists who say the US needs to start building cities again for this reason. It's not sustainable to have 90% of job growth in 10 metro areas. It's also not sustainable to build new suburbs, that land is mined out.

So: new cities.

Florida is sending random undocumented immigrants pulled over in traffic stops to the Everglades detention camp, and because the whole thing was set up haphazardly, they still don’t have any easy way to find out if someone is detained there (like at any normal detention center or jail).
Florida is committing "enforced disappearance," a very serious violation of international human rights law.

Like there is really no disagreement among genuine specialists on this stuff around “we do in fact need more air conditioning access globally AND we need to do these other things.”

But the main point is that you can’t do the other things and skip the AC without causing mass death.

I’ve read a lot of research on air conditioning, heat waves, and mortality, and there’s extremely strong consensus among actual experts about “we need to expand global access to air conditioning at the same time as we engage in other sustainable measures, like better architecture and green spaces.”

Today, volunteering on planning issues often feels like a waste of time, because even housing that complies flawlessly with every aspect of a plan is so often killed by meritless #CEQA lawsuits.

It took heroic efforts to get HB 5002 through the CT legislature. CT has some of the most expensive suburbs & most restrictive zoning in the US - 2+ acre minimum lot sizes near excellent transit infrastructure & job access. Deeply frustrating to see Gov. Lamont's veto.
Gov. Lamont says he will *veto* HB 5002, the broad housing bill proponents say would boost affordable housing in the state.

He says he hopes to see an amended version in a special session this fall.

“Veto to me means we can do a lot better.”

Florida child welfare officers found a 17-year-old living in a shed with no food or water. They sent him to a foster home... and then reported him to ICE, whereupon he was handcuffed and shackled and marched to detention.

Not only is that victimizing him again, it violates Florida's own rules.

this story is just a great illustration of NIMBY nihilism. at core, these people have no vision for anything. they simply oppose change for the sake of opposition. (i also think there is an element of death denial here — if i can prevent all physical changes i can deny the reality of my mortality)
Peak NIMBY brain is trying to keep a neighboring airport open, even though the planes that land there are literally spraying toxins over your home, because if the airport closes then they're going to build affordable housing there. lapublicpress.org/2025/06/sant...

Went down a rabbit hole of typical elevator peak and average power consumption, and concluded that a modest EV-derived battery pack paired with AC inverter + motor would be an incredibly cost-effective way to power elevators in residential buildings without necessitating any electrical upgrades
talking to a developer last night about cost to install an elevator in a low-rise building in seattle

turns out it's not just the higher direct cost (US elevators are > 3X more expensive than swiss or german ones) - but requires 3-phase power, and SCL costs to get power to site are incredibly high
