One of the fundamental career public defender insights is that the legal system prizes civility and professionalism far more than justice.

I get that some people genuinely think every trans person is mentally ill, or delusional, but if your response to the existence of trans people of that its ok if they get raped in prison, you're a disgusting disgrace of a human being.
BREAKING: Trump administration plans to end prison rape protections for trans & intersex people, memo says. A DOJ memo says certain standards under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) do not align with Trump’s Jan. 20 anti-trans executive order, @byadamrhodes.bsky.social reports.

these people need to be disbarred. I recognize that state bar discipline can take time, and I don't think anything should be rushed, but these cases need to move to the front of the line. if they aren't gonna do it for the sake of the country, they need to do it for the profession's reputation.
NEWS: During a hearing in federal court in VA, prosecutors confirmed that the operative indictment in the case against James Comey was never shown to or voted on by the entire grand jury before it was presented in open court.

Defense counsel argued that’s a complete bar to further prosecution

This, plus the beginning of Watership Down and the entirety of an insane Canadian movie called “The Peanut Butter Solution” (I think). Pure nightmare fuel.
Growing up we there any moments in movies that traumatized you?

Honestly I’m trying to figure out whether I want to read this because I WILL have some sort of emotional breakdown.
“.. They are the asylum seekers, the rule followers. They go into the federal building holding papers .. hoping for a measure of due process. Some leave the courthouse with a hearing date set months or years from now. Others disappear into ICE’s prison system.”

Co-sign. She’s unbelievable in that movie, and arguably outshines both Beatty and Jack.
There are so many Diane Keaton performances to remember, but a lot of people haven't seen Reds, and A) my God, see it, it is a masterpiece and B) her performance as Louise Bryant is one of the bravest, toughest, least sympathy-courting pieces of work by an American actress in the last 50 years.

I can’t handle these Sox-Yankees games the way I could when I was young. That was before “blood pressure” was a concept that had any relevance to my everyday life.

Let's be clear: no one should be taking medical advice from the man who told Americans to inject bleach.

To moms worried about the Tylenol they took while pregnant: you deserve better than being RFK Jr's scapegoat.

And to the autism community: you are loved exactly as you are.

Democracy, more than anything is a practice. I always think that the Civil Rights Movement succeeded because from the Civil War black Americans built institutions: universities, fraternities and sororities, churches, that engaged them in democratic practice.
generally speaking, and with the glaring exception of november 2024, the more directly democratic an institution has been, the better it has checked Trump (eg grand and petit juries); the more elite and insular, the less effective (the Senate, the Supreme Court, big business)

(I’d put prison conditions, family defense and other similar lawyers with technically “civil” practice in the category of criminal defense for trauma purposes. Same with the support staff for all those lawyers. I’m sure I’m still leaving many out, but that’s a start.)

I guess on a very basic level we need to tell people over and over that watching cable news is not something a smart person does it’s the opposite of that. You can feel free to watch Top Chef or baseball or Mario 64 speedruns, none of them, genuinely, will make you as ignorant as CNN shouty bullshit

Sort of puts the lie to the “it’s a distraction to get sucked into Republican culture war nonsense” theory when its very proponents decide to enthusiastically repeat and amplify some of that same nonsense, doesn’t it?

Embrace “Spencer Tracy in ‘Bad Day at Black Rock’ Thought.”
The rise of people like Lander and Walz, whose ideologies don't exactly match mine but have the exact right combination of "love thy neighbor" and "fuck you, asshole" attitudes, is massive positive for people who care about left of center politics
