I received this email about Democrats caving to end the shutdown from one of the SNAP recipients I spoke to:
I'm sorry, I know this is not your problem, but I just felt like screaming into a void seeing that now Dems may cave and end the shutdown without getting anything they were supposedly fighting for. We've been put through hell for weeks, constantly having our ability to simply feed ourselves dangled in front of our faces, our survival used as a bargaining chip, told it was for a reason. Our suffering would prevent even more suffering and that it would be temporary and worth it to save healthcare for millions. And now it's all for nothing. They stood for nothing. They caused suffering for no reason. They'll cause even more suffering for no reason. It wasn't 40 million people starving that made them cave. They were willing to put up with that. But the threat of holiday traveling being disrupted seems to be the thing to push them to give in. They have failed everyone. I'm so angry.

Today the 3rd Circuit Court ordered the @post-gazette.com to restore our contract it illegally tore up 5 years ago. That’s our health care, PTO, right to a 40-hr. work week, short-term disability and so much more we’ve struck for 3+ years.

A final update from Quirk Books Union ✊💔 Devastated that, in the three months since we unionized, management never met the union at the bargaining table -- and now the remaining four union members have all been laid off.
On October 1st, Quirk Books became an imprint of Andrews McMeel Publishing, and as a result, the positions of all the remaining union members have been eliminated. We were scheduled to begin bargaining our contract on October 2nd. We're dismayed that this has happened-we truly love the work we have done and the books we have helped create at Quirk, and the union was our effort to ensure that those books could continue being made sustainably and well. Given the acquisition of the company and the layoffs, Quirk Books Union will no longer exist. Despite how this is ending, we greatly value the experiences we've had and the knowledge we've gained through the unionization process. To anyone else thinking of unionizing: Please don't get discouraged! As we've learned, it's a hard fight that doesn't always end well, but we believe that unionization efforts will only serve to make publishing and labor better for all.
