If you follow me you know I can barely draw a decent rendition of a photo—but in my main chosen creative field, this resonates hard. Why on earth would I *not* want to do the work that sustains me?
gAI is so existentially threatening not because I care about my job or money -- capitalism dictates I have to care, but it's more money is how I continue to do art, which means I continue to want to live.

the salespitch "oh you don't have to do the work" is heard by my ears as "we want you to die"

AI stuff feels opposite. Much AI art has the form of traditional art - you get drawings, videos, etc - but without an artists' intention.

As is the case with sampling, there's less perceived craft. There's not, however, the intent behind it. There's no artist.

This feels of a piece with the modern movements expanding the question of what art is, though if inverted

Compare to Duchamp's "Fountain" in which something that is NOT typical art is presented as such, by intention and setting

It isn't art-shaped, but is art
Read bad art. Write bad art. Critique bad art.

The "liberals have to learn how to live with people we diagree with" line kinda stops making sense in a world where the central disagreement is whether disagreeing with them should be allowed at all

Bluesky is a wonderful place that has flourished in large part because of its artists and intolerance towards facists/Nazis. The Updated policy currently going into effect Oct 15 could fuck that up and we should be very vocal about it. Here are some specific things to mention in feedback (THREAD)

when we talk about censorship of sex and sexuality, I'll be honest, this is the kind of thing that keeps me up at night above even my own work being blacklisted. at best right now we've got "it's okay if it's in an educational context" but who decides that, and how
tbh reposting this on here (there aren't a lot of kids on here) feels a bit futile so I just want to champion Scarleteen as a really incredible accessible resource for kids seeking inclusive sex ed (+ other stuff re: teen safety) and if you can get it into the hands of kiddos now that'd be good
LGTBQ+ youth disproportionately experience homelessness compared to their straight and cis peers. In the US, up to 40% of unhoused youth identify as LGBTQ+.

That’s why this series was created - to provide support, essential tips, and resources to youth who are so often overlooked by the system.

Trump and Dems are officially meeting Monday.

This is after Trump cancelled his last meeting with Democrats because they were holding firm on immigrant and transgender protections.

The Republican budget has dozens of anti-LGBTQ+ riders.

Call your Dem senators, people, don't let them capitulate.

Call your senators and your house rep.
Make a stink by being clear that abandoning trans adults and children is a no-go.
Cis people, call and be loud for us. We are tired.
1. Trump has dug in on anti-trans provisions in the shutdown fight this morning, cancelling a meeting with Dems unless they cave on trans people.

His post to Truth Social is a clear indication that Republicans are making targeting trans people a priority.

So, I’m nobody on here, but I can at least be part of a statistic, hoping it leads to change.

During the proposed #BlueskyBlackout2025 against over-broad #bskycensorship re: consent in art, I want to speak out. This policy as written has serious problems, and I hope we can fix it before it’s live.

The heartbreaking thing about this
is that there’s already a proven way
to invest lots of money in a knowledge machine
that produces unforeseeable results
that include fantastically profitable ideas
(and some life-saving ones)
and generally benefit society
and this machine is called
a university
From the replies (bsky.app/profile/dasb...) here's Sam Altman doing what the quoted post described. He seems serious about it.

I have no sufficient words to express it but PBS is one of the all time great American institutions of learning and culture. A bastion of American excellence sent out to the larger world.

I shouldn’t be surprised that it’s being targeted. But it’s unfathomably sad and to the detriment of us all.
