Not to go all Robert Gordon but the potential benefits as a % of GDP are also much smaller. Going from no internet to internet is a much bigger bang for your buck than going from internet to AI

I'm sitting on the university wide social sciences curriculum committee for the first time and curricula review IS exactly the punishment I would wish on my worst enemies
This document is … insane? Incredible?
In it the USG shakes down a university for $1.17 BILLION “to avoid legal action” and dictates how hiring, promotion, admissions, scholarships, and CURRICULA REVIEW will be conducted. It stipulates how and when students can protest on campus.
It is un-American

My neighbors and I have so many credibly identified causal studies of the effects of immigration on wages, employment, innovation, crime, and intergenerational mobility ready to deploy (via beamer presentation)
Portland resists with whimsical improv theater, Chicago resists by screaming at weird jagoffs that don’t belong in the neighborhood. Every city brings its own strengths to the fight
The energy we need is this suburban dad standing out in the street -- barefoot with Blackhawks pajama pants on -- screaming at the masked goons to get the fuck out of their neighborhood.

Interesting discussion by two people whose opinions i respect about PhD education in the wake of Harvard's decision to downsize.
Look things aren’t super great but tbth this type of doomerism doesn’t help.
Harvard is the 'best case scenario' for US research pedagogy (at least, financially). They have a $57bn endowment. I think the takeaway here is that the days of most PhD programs in the US are numbered
