but at the end of the day, whether cops brutalize protesters or take a more hands-off approach, there’s still a massive, daily presence of state/county police providing security outside ice’s fortress so masked agents can continue to abduct our neighbors.

My publisher’s been very patient. I’m not doing everything I said I’d do to promote this book (out in a few weeks) because I’m an organizer in a city under federal attack. My days are full and emotionally exhausting. Any help getting the word out means a lot. It's a book people need right now.

Hey, photography friends, this could be a good place to throw a few bucks to a fellow photographer.
@yourstorymatters.bsky.social has been doing phenomenal work OTG in Chicago (mostly over on Instagram), documenting assaults on the press and protesters. Last night a needed lens disappeared in the chaos.

If you picked up this Sigma, get in touch!

the dont sign up for protests advice is the equivalent to cover up your tattoos and your face at protests, and leave your phone at home when attending them. its literally just to reduce the amount of identifiers of yourself for your safety. they are calling peaceful protests an act of terrorism.
The “don’t sign up for protests” thing is just an outgrowth of the Online tendency to one-up other people on how much you care. Oh, they’re protesting and signing people up for it? I’ll show them by claiming that’s wrong and you can care more by not signing up.

If I were editing a college president’s guest essay about the importance of colleges hosting “difficult speakers,” I would ask her to clarify how her argument squares with her history of expelling students for protesting, and why speakers should be treated better than her own students.

Calling out political extremists for being hypocritical (“they claim to value free speech, but actually try to censor speech they don’t like!”) is like calling out a football team for playing both offense and defense. They’re not trying to embody fixed standards, they’re just trying to win.

I'm not sure if people have really absorbed this week's lesson of how the mainstream political establishment is ready to justify and go along with a massive crackdown on any left political expression.

EVERYONE IN CHICAGOLAND:

Save this number in your phone. If you see an ICE raid:

1. Ask the the person their name

2. Ask who to call to let them know they’ve been taken by ICE

3. Tell them to not say anything

4. Call this number to report the arrest

If possible video it

Someone asked me what victory against the forces seeking to occupy Chicago looks like. Obviously, those forces being repelled is the goal, but there are layers to what success looks like in these deteriorating conditions. The first is to successfully resist the normalization of military occupation.

Trump wants to make the military takeovers scary to stop resistance but the truth is the military is not large enough to control all the major cities if there is mass resistance. They'd need 600k troops at a minimum and the national guard only has ~336k. They can't actually hold cities if we resist.

Some people don't feel as close to this as they ought to. Most of us are just a bad break or two away from winding up on the streets, and addiction & mental health crises can affect anyone. They're gutting services and rendering more of us disposable, and there's a carceral disposal system waiting.

Don’t buy the UChicago propaganda. What was forcibly destroyed last night was not a safety threat but a space of community, joy, and learning all aimed at stopping the limestone hedge fund from continuing its role in genocide. Like their country, they have no conscience. None.
