The coolest thing I’ve seen today is that a bunch of volunteer public health professionals and developers have restored the CDC website from before January 20th 2025.

This differs from an archive in that they want to rebuild the links between pages and replicate the full website.

looks like the cable news anchors are finally asking minor questions like “what does a mass deportation actually look like” and “are you going to deport citizen children?”

The New Deal actually offers a model here. Its architects saw democracy and prosperity as intricately intertwined and, moreover, knew they had to *promote* the idea that they were connected.
the challenge is building out an alternative cultural story that connects prosperity to solidarity and democracy. that *convinces* people that you can be a success without climbing over others. i don’t know where that will come from! i think it is something that you’ll ultimately have to find.

now that I’ve had a few days to process the election, I think my reaction is: let blue states cook

no more of this “our infrastructure project needs 80 studies” and refusal to build housing.

it’s time to turn the blue states/cities into a utopia and advertising point for dems

I 100% do not think it is at all ‘easy’ to do, but talking about the issues social media creates like it’s this impossible to solve problem is needlessly defeatist. The way in which like, what maybe 5-6 specific websites are currently construed is 90% of the problem.

Got mad enough about this that I turned this thread into a blog.

Kamala Harris did not engage in overt identity politics.

Donald Trump did. It probably helped him.

And yet, pundits like Weiss, Stephens & Dowd treat identity politics *only* as a failed Dem tactic.

A Russian milblogger reports North Korean soldiers in Russia are motivated and eager to learn but struggle to distinguish Russians from Ukrainians, requiring digital translation for orders. They’re unlikely suited for offensive roles yet, though they seem set to stay long-term.

I thought "the right to pregnant teenagers" was a typo--like they probably wanted to do something to pregnant teens. But no. They're literally arguing "decreased births constitute 'a sovereign injury to the state in itself,' and causes downstream injuries like 'losing a seat in Congress'”

Holy shit

FFS, Trump is not in any way "an isolationist." Trump believes that the US should not be bound by any international organizations. That is not isolationism. That's just a belief in brute force.

A point that I make to anyone who will listen is that currently we do not have a system in the United States to uncover undocumented people the government does not already know about. It doesn’t exist. So, to carry out mass deportations, we would have to create one — and it would transform us.

The most poignant thing about this case is that the whistleblower did manage to get a national stage in exposing Trump. And he is still unsure if it made any difference.
For those of us who have spent years warning about Trump on a much smaller scale, it is entirely dispiriting.
New, from me:
Two stories that offer sharply contrasting visions of public service in the era of Trump
*Elon Musk's conflict of interests with the government he has lobbied to be put in charge of
*The whistleblower who triggered Trumps first impeachment
