a quick update on my postdoc

p/s I very much like it!
This isn’t a class. It’s a controlled descent into the madness of the nervous system. Bring caffeine, nicotine, amphetamines—whatever gets you through. Strap in. Keep your wits. And remember: in neuroscience as in Vegas, you can’t stop the wave—you can only learn to ride it.

Hot of the press!
We studied how the nervous system simplifies control of complex limb dynamics. Turns out, muscle activity during reaching is shaped by the gravitational & dynamic forces—and joint moments tell us a lot.

Control signal dimensionality depends on limb dynamics
Neural control of movement has to overcome the problem of redundancy in the multidimensional musculoskeletal system. The problem can be solved by reducing the dimensionality of the control space of mo...

New paper alert in NNR @asnrehab.bsky.social !

Q: Does stroke impact motor adaptation—our ability to correct motor errors through feedback and practice?

A: Based on our meta-analysis involving 21 datasets & 283 patients with stroke, we found that stroke has a detrimental effect on adaptation.

All jokes aside, I totally buy this. I often take even just a short break to get coffee and during that time reflect on the problem I'm stuck on. More often than not that totally changes my approach to solving it with success
This will be henceforth justifying my rampant procrastination
Meta-analysis (n=52 studies, 195 effect sizes) confirms the incubation effect: taking breaks away from a problem leads to more creative solutions (d=0.39)

We just open-sourced two large wrist electromyography (EMG) datasets - one towards typing without a keyboard and the other for predicting hand poses - with baselines.

We believe these will help advance research into making high bandwidth non-invasive neuromotor interfaces a reality!
Advancing Neuromotor Interfaces by Open Sourcing Surface Electromyography (sEMG) Datasets for Pose Estimation and Surface Typing
We’re releasing emg2qwerty and emg2pose—two large datasets and benchmarks for sEMG-based typing and pose estimation, as part of the NeurIPS 2024 Datasets and Benchmarks track.
