I keep remembering things, vaguely. Resisting the urge to be silent by celebrating motes in the starlight. Rooting for Homo sapiens, but a sad trombonist for these end times. Sou’westo regionalist, grudging 🇨🇦, reconciling on traditional lands of the S.O.N.

This is a long way* from my wheelhouse, but it seems obvious that as slop and hallucinations proliferate chatbots will be sampling ever-worse info and generating ever-worse answers, feeding on themselves in an ouroboros of garbage

*it’s possible everyone else has already concluded this
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

"A cyclist can go 3 or 4 times faster than a pedestrian, but uses 5 times less energy. The bicycle is the perfect transducer to match metabolic energy to impedance of locomotion. Equipped with this tool, man outstrips efficiency of not only all machines, but all other animals as well."

When a chatbot gets something wrong, it’s not because it made an error. It’s because on that roll of the dice, it happened to string together a group of words that, when read by a human, represents something false. But it was working entirely as designed. It was supposed to make a sentence & it did.

I expect that consumer-facing AI programs will continue to improve and they may become much more useful tools for everyday life in the future.

But I think it was a disastrous mistake that today’s models were taught to be convincing before they were taught to be right.

Which is another reason their use by students to *do* the work of research and writing for them is skills-annihilating. No, LLMs are NOT just like calculators, a simple tool that can be used well or not. In math you still have to show your work. 1/n

LLM use in research and writing doesn't just mean students aren't doing the work, it means they literally abandon the very skills development and knowledge acquisition necessary for any intellectual job, let alone to know whether or when LLMs are giving them bullshit or useful info. 2/n

When educators freak out about AI, it's not because we're lamplighters fighting the invention of the lightbulb, or because we're lazy and don't want to innovate our teaching methods - it's because there's a genuine learning crisis at hand, the stupifying of society. 3/3

Kentucky exports over $9.3 billion worth of products to Canada per year.
Replacing that with Canadian keeps $9.3 billion in Canada.
That money goes to Canadian farmers, workers, truckers, O&G, investors etc.
There is no downside.

The biggest problem with putting plans for bombing Yemen in a group chat is that THE UNITED STATES HAS BOMBED YEMEN ALMOST FIVE HUNDRED TIMES SINCE 2002, NOT INCLUDING THE ILLEGAL CLUSTER MUNITIONS AND OTHER WEAPONS WE GAVE THE SAUDIS TO ALSO USE TO BOMB YEMEN.

WE SHOULD STOP BOMBING YEMEN.
