My *parents" lived through the war, my *grandfathers* served in it, I grew up in the 70s and 80s, when it remained emphatically "THE WAR", I know damn well it's gotten a lot weirder lately.
Fair point. There is something odd going on, however, in that the further away the Second World War retreats from lived experience, the larger, louder, more garish, tacky, and hectoring the memorials become.
My grandparents both lived through the war; I think they would have found this weird.

People are taking the piss out of this, but I was intrigued by the Polish marking. Turns out it's an acknowledgment by the local community of three Polish squadrons who flew from a local RAF base, 22 of whom died in service and 6 of whom are buried locally. I think the mockery is uncalled for.

Living in York, is a great place to reflect on what it means to be 'British'. Founded in 71AD by the Roman Empire, Eboracum was such an important city that two Roman Emperors happened to be here when they died. The multangular tower is largely of Roman construction. @VisitYork

The sheer greasy desperation from these bastards that any violent crime is committed by an immigrant so they can continue their grift. Even when they know it isn't true. Foul.
Matt Goodwin attributes a crime that he now knows appears to have been committed by people born in Britain in the early 1990s to "mass uncontrolled immigration"

Children in care, children with SEND, children in poverty - all are being failed.

Over time historical memory of a distant mid-20th century will have as little grip on contemporary culture as the First World War, Waterloo or Agincourt.
Those who want to protect democracy will need to find new ways of pushing back against myths of fascist supremacism and militaristic glory.

Memory of the Second World War and genocidal Nazi crimes is now as distant to Zoomers as memory of trenches at the Somme and Verdun was to my Xennial generation born in the late 1970s and 1980s.
The battle against myths of Nazism can no longer rely on lived experience of its catastrophic realities

Evidently there was an Auschwitz-themed float in a Halloween parade in Pennsylvania.
The float was for a Catholic school, and to their credit the church immediately disavowed it.
Thing is, I don’t think high school kids did this entirely on their own. I’m guessing parents had to be involved.

This is really poor by BBC researchers and producers. Goodwin hasn't been an active academic for a number of years, yet is described as one (thus legitimating his relentless Reform activism and constant bad faith misrepresentation of evidence). 1/?
Wikipedia says Shaheen is an academic. BBCQT implies you can’t trust what she says b/c she’s an ‘activist’. Someone who Wikipedia calls ‘a former academic’ who now campaigns for Reform & wants to be its first Home Secretary is an ‘academic & author’ who you can trust. Maybe they use Grokipedia now.

3 things Starmer could do instead of camps in old barracks that would actually WORK👇
1. Create safe, regulated routes to apply for asylum in the UK
2. Let asylum seekers WORK & support themselves

This thread by @suecowley.bsky.social is fab.
Joy. That's what is missing way too often from the current discourse on learning and education. I don't mean being overtly happy all the time, nor having endless fun at school (as if!), but an underlying belief that learning can be a joyful, engaging process, not just stuffing more into your memory.

Labour’s pledge not to raise income tax was grotesquely irresponsible - as many of us argued at the time.
But that pledge was made.
At a time when trust in politics is dangerously low, breaking it may have very dark consequences.
And those who want to burn politics down will feed on the fury.

There was a time Starmer/Reeves could made the argument to raise income taxes and VAT. There was even a moment they could have made the argument to break their manifesto pledge. It’s far too late. Now it would spell disaster for them and for politics. My latest👇

When was the last time you heard a politician in the media asked anything like-
-How will you make sure asylum seekers can reach the UK safely & refugees are protected?
-How will you make sure people coming to this country to work or study are treated equally & with respect?
I cannot remember.
