state legislators should be paid more. otherwise the legislatures are full of dilettantes, cranks, and nepobabies. this is why you keep hearing about the craziest fucking state laws
people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up
The Mayor of New York only makes $260k. I bet there are police that make more than that in NY with overtime.

We need to pay elected leaders more money and stop pretending it's some sort of calling. They're managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and millions of people's lives.

So it’s just betting on political/social/market events? So the person who had more sway over these events is going to run a betting app for them? Perfect

notice the general mood of the timeline? how everyone is in a good mood and there’s a lot less misery and dooming? how there’s a lot of “we’re going to beat these assholes”?

anyway that’s why these events are important

I was at the the No Kings march in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Many elderly or disabled folks who couldn’t make it to Manhattan, but also young families and people of all ages. I stood in the same spot for more than an hour and the stream of protesters was constant. Amazing turnout.

they believe “criminal” is a kind of person you are, not a status contingent upon actions you take. J6 rioters going to jail was not an outrage because there are no laws they could break that would make them criminals, whilst innocence or guilt have no bearing on if others are criminals or not

If you’re white, your accomplishments are your own and you can resent and criticize the country all you like, but if you’re black and successful you should be grateful to white people for allowing you in their presence. bsky.app/profile/jess...
Weaponized gratitude is a key tool in the abuser's toolkit. The goal is to convince the victim that they owe the abuser so much, they should feel guilty for wanting to complain.

I wrote about Ta-Nehisi Coates and Ezra Klein, why swallowing live frogs is a bad idea, and how context and history can release you from bright-kid syndrome, the illusion that you yourself are going to have every answer or fix the world.
You don't have to swallow frogs
Klein and Coates show that if you don't know what your core beliefs are, you're going to get played.

I think it’s a combination of COVID hangover leading to incumbents of all stripes losing around the world the last few years, social media distorting everything with a strong negativity bias, right wing media dominance, and Biden was not an energetic salesman for what he’d accomplished
A challenge to politics-understanders: why was Biden so unpopular given the very good policy he delivered on wages, climate, & antitrust, among others? This is not an invitation to relitigate 2024, but rather explore what his political failure reveals about the underlying mechanisms of politics.
Ah, I see. I suppose I want deliverism to work, but fear Biden proves it doesn't, so I want someone to explain convincingly why some future attempt would be different. Perhaps that's not clear

Hmm, "We need to have a Nuremberg-style trial for every gender-affirming clinic doctor" is a little like calling people Nazis. It it's free speech when Kirk says it, it's free speech for everyone.

@saletan.bsky.social on the right's free-speech double standard:
Charlie Kirk’s Rules of Free Speech
Republicans want to prosecute the left for incendiary words that could lead to violence. They should read Kirk’s own incendiary words first.

If you think that due process only applies to citizens then ask yourself what you would do if someone accused you of being a non citizen. Either we all have due process or no one does. The Constitution affords the former. SCOTUS has unleashed the latter.

it's reasonable that driving requires identification. driving on public roads is a privilege that the state extends to those who can do so responsibly. "being latino in public" is not a restricted activity to which the state can reasonably extend a burden of licensure.
