people in power largely make decisions based on what they've *heard* not on what they've read.

the report matters less than the oral summary of the report given by a staffer that makes its way into conversation at events.

as I've mentioned before, Washington DC policymaking is an oral culture that believes itself to be a literate one.
It’s like large portions of America are retreating to a primarily oral culture, where complex language, analysis, logic, and abstraction are being abandoned for repetitive, simplistic, personalized, agonistic, homeostatic, and situational thinking.

the chad allied engineering: look, you don't actually need a charging handle, cutting a slot in the bolt saves us $.10 and 20 minutes per unit, we're gonna make a million of these

Kinda fucked that in DVTL I had the Saudis run "export gulags" (importing dissidents from foreign autocracies to be used as slave labor) and uh the administration has basically decided do that with Bukele

This is why my life goal is to write the most unpopular Halo novel of in which "the cult of the operator" is smeared into a bloody pulp in the first 5 pages and the rest of the book is simply ordinary people doing extraordinary things with a combination of luck, skill, speed, and violence
Reading Mick Ryan's "White Sun War" tonight. Early in the book there's a space-cyber op that seemed implausible to me, I thought "Lol, what next, {EVEN BIGGER LESS PLAUSIBLE OP}?"

200 pages later...

Precisely {EVEN BIGGER LESS PLAUSIBLE SPACE-CYBER OP} is indeed the war winning plan, sigh

An extensive air campaign in Yemen, air strikes in Iraq and Somalia, and U.S. troops still deployed to Syria despite an end to the civil war. Why has an administration that is made up of so many figures critical of “forever war” continuing “forever war” unabated? I have a theory.

If you go to Taipei, you can visit museums dedicated to this period.

If you go to Lyudao, you can go to a prison where political prisoners are incarcerated.

These horrible things did happen, and Taiwan is brave enough to confront this fact and make amends for it.

I hate people who say shit like "another Libya," like what does that mean? We avoided a Syria in Libya. Our failure in Libya was not that we overthrew a dictator but that we failed to continue what we started. And we should be outraged for not failing to continue, not for removing Gaddafi.
Yeah. I’ll feel real full of regret if Assad goes the way of Gaddafi. Truly hope that doesn’t happen. The horror.

Syrian rebels are consolidating their gains in the South. They are taking the towns in Daraa without a fight and in the process capture armored vehicles fully intact. This is in Saida.
