Today I am thinking of Rev. Jonathan Myrick Daniels, an Episcopal seminarian who was shot and killed protecting a 17-year old Black girl from a shotgun blast in Alabama. I took this photo of an icon of him at an Episcopal retreat I went on last year. The deputy sheriff who murdered him was acquitted

Are Penguin spines just bad? I'm reading a Scribe book and the spine has basically not cracked at all despite being over half way through it but the Penguin Thucydides copy I bought cracked almost immediately after purchase

Once you think of the state as a tendency toward claiming monopolies on violence or monopolies on the licensing of violence etc. it is IMHO perfectly natural to say that a well-constructed government should possess only so much of that tendency, that stateness, as serves society's interests.

There is very little literature on the contemporary scene about the unhappy, miserable woman. I don't mean the anxious woman or the hysterical woman. But the quietly unhappy one who wastes away with a lack of meaning. The middle class male striver novel focuses on this, but where for women?
