Thanks to Flame Tree Press for this very shiny author copy of its latest anthology! That’s Achilles on the front and me on page 137. If you’re as obsessed with Greek mythology as I am, treat yourself to this one

Absolutely egregious from the people who bought the three oldest magazines in SFF and are attempting to convert them into a giant funnel of monetizable IP
This postscript is so telling of what trying to negotiate with MRM is like. Massive respect for Scott in sticking to his principles and not allowing them to bully or gaslight him into signing. I'm disgusted that this is still happening to authors. No market is worth this.
Did you read my post from last week about how contract woes caused me to withdraw an accepted story from F&SF, ending my 54-year quest to be published in that magazine? But wait (as the saying goes) — there's more! Scroll down at the link for an update. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

None of this is industry naivete
if Steven Salpeter wasn't himself a former literary agent you might be like, ah perhaps this is a mistake made by new owners unfamiliar with publishing contracts
Apparently the SFWA won't name names but I will: ANALOG. The new contract under Must Read Magazines includes a moral rights waiver. And they are rather insistent about it. I'm guessing this applies to all the digests under MRM now, though I haven't seen those contracts. DON'T JUST SIGN. NEGOTIATE.

SFWA should revoke their qualifying status if they don’t go back to reasonable contracts…

Have you seen this, @joannechocolat.bsky.social
@societyofauthors.bsky.social? This is important information for authors who routinely sell short stories. I'm sure more than one person has signed one of these contracts without fully appreciating the significance of "alleged" vs. "sustained"

sometimes an insult is simultaneously so targeted and so uncalled for that it just straight-up unmoors you from reality, like the brief liminal space you inhabit when you hit your head. I think this is that

Goodnight from Joe Waterfield, dismissing his sighting of Corpse Friars’ lanterns as a sign he drank too much at The Windlass pub. Goodnight from William Heywall up at Palefire Farm, writing a petition to the Field Sprite to amend the terms of its blood tithe. Goodnight from Hookland.

sometimes it will just hit me that over a million americans died from covid in a short period of time and we never had a national mourning. we never collectively grieved. we never honored the dead. this feels like a failure

i miss the nights
we trembled like cobwebs
in a tree.

the crinkling crispness
of the autumn air,
the leaves gamboling
down the street,

each of us a jack-o-lantern
lit from within,
smiling wryly,
secrets safe and decaying,

greeting another
moonless Halloween.
