Every single person in Britain: "the chippy" or, if we're being fancy, "the chip shop"

The New York Times: "the french fry restaurant"
new favourite New York Times term for a British thing just dropped

I am somewhat sceptical of this new suggestion of going beyond the Leveson recommendations on reducing the number of jury trials, but I am getting a little annoyed at all the (IMO) excessive outrage on here over it

Looking at polling averages, Reform has dipped a little recently but it's largely because of Labour 24 voters who had been saying "don't know" now saying Green.

As DKs they were excluded but as Greens they are not, so Reform drop even though they have the same number of people supporting them.

Grand opening, grand closing.

X quietly disabled a new feature that showed which country an account was posting from when it revealed that lots of popular right wing MAGA accounts were being run from foreign countries like India and Nigeria.

Anyone know if other countries have similar issues?
There are studies coming out that link the state legalization of online sports books to a spike in domestic violence. Of course this was a foreseeable outcome of the 2018 Supreme Court decision that made this insidious wealth extraction engine possible.

It would have been the easiest thing for the Russians to say nothing and let Trump try to pressure Ukraine into accepting. Fortunately, they absolutely cannot help themselves.

This, from the Guardian, is Ryanair at its very worst.

It's not good enough for them to insist that they're a low-cost airline and everyone knows the rules, in circumstances like this...

I wonder if legislation is needed?

mtg spent like ten years making enemies on the left and that seemed fine with her. she spent ten days making enemies on the right, had to hire security, and then had to quit altogether.

Musk has apparently manipulated Grok so much that it says he's a better athlete than LeBron James and a funnier comedian than Jerry Seinfeld.

Imagine being so insecure you need to program an LLM to boost you like that.

I wonder how Cyprus splits between “proper” Cyprus and “fake-country” Cyprus? I assume “proper” Cyprus has a much higher score

I wonder why Matt Taibi draws an immediate connection between the Epstein story and Russia.

Hold on, let me think for a second. I’m sure I can come up with a reason why Matt Taibi would hear ‘sex with underage girls’ and think of Russia.

This comparison would only work if it was the main UK opposition party that went nuts/clearly racist, not their own party…
That American politics went off the rails after Barack Obama and British ethnonationalism has reared its head after Rishi Sunak is the real tell about how committed some people are to integration and post racial politics.
A country where Sadiq Khan can lead London, Humza Yousaf can lead Scotland, and Rishi Sunak can lead Britain is a country where the racists had *lost*. So much of this vicious bile has come directly after that and almost no one seems to draw the connection

Crypto fun: if you'd bought a load of ethereum, supposedly the future of crypto, in 2018 when it was still pretty new it has returned less than if you had bought S&P500. If you bought in 2021 during the last boom you'd be *down*, versus a 2x gain in the S&P 500 total return

'The Labour Party is a moral crusade or it is nothing'. Nothing moral about threatening to remove people's jewellery, or deporting them after 20 years. Nothing at all.
