Took this pic in yeg on the evening of August 8. Stunning cloud formation, IMO.

seems like trump mainly uses “low IQ” to describe black people. of a piece with his birtherism and his insistence that there are specific, low-wage “black jobs” that must be protected from immigrants
I listened to President Trump call Rep. Jasmine Crockett a "low IQ individual" and I realized I had heard that before, so put the question to ChatGPT.

If you like a good snowstorm in late March, then Edmonton is the place you want to be. About 25 cm in my yard in the last 12 hours.😬

My eyes popped when I saw novelist Stephen Markley's name in the credits for the new TV series "Paradise". I then poked around & read that showrunner Dan Fogelman was inspired in part by Markley's brilliant novel, "The Deluge". Now that I know, I can hear Markley's authorial voice in the show.♥️

#NowPlaying Anyone else remember this 1986 gem? I’m playing it today for the first time in a while & it still sounds great. Love the vocal performances on this album.

“Every war begins in blind folly and ends in unimagined suffering.” That wise, startling sentence opens George Packer’s remarkable essay on the novel, “All Quiet on the Western Front” in the March issue of @theatlantic.com.

Today’s NY Times Spelling Bee had an “S” as one of its letters. I don’t recall ever seeing an “S” before—does anyone else remember ever seeing that? At any rate, it made getting to Genius incredibly easy.

Reviewers can't seem to agree on whether Michael Deagler's "Early Sobrieties" (2024) is a novel or a short story collection, but pretty much everyone agrees it is a fantastic read. Let's call it an episodic novel. When it's funny, it's really funny. When it's sad, it's really sad.

Tr*mp will never admit a wrong. Since the site acknowledging guilt in the treatment of Japanese Americans has been taken down, it indicates that he knows that his treatment of individuals illegally in the US is wrong but he doesn't care.
I went to post about the National Japanese American Memorial in D.C., which is beautiful but usually missed by tourists. It is a deeply staggering admission of guilt and a warning to future Americans. I went to link to the inscriptions and-

Well, they took the site down. www.nps.gov/places/japan...

Stephen Markley's monumental 2023 novel, The Deluge, proves more and more prophetic with each passing month. In the novel, LA suffers massive, horrific fires fed by the impact of climate change. And it only gets worse. If leaders read The Deluge, they would start addressing climate change tomorrow.

The debut album by England’s Working Week turns 40 in 2025. This album, including its gorgeous cover, embodies the brilliance of the music coming out of the U.K. in the mid-80s. On this dark December evening, it still sounds as intoxicating as ever.

It's the winter solstice--the turning point we all wait for every winter. In 2021, Robin Pecknold/Fleet Foxes recorded a live solo album to mark the winter solstice that year. Here's a sample of that richly poignant album. It seems so suited to this day of the longest night.

On December 8, in 1966, Sinead O'Connor was born in Dublin. Her premature death marked the loss of a truly remarkable talent. It's impossible to listen to "Troy" and not realize she was one of the most astonishing, powerful singers of our lifetime. 🖤

You all will know I have been kidnapped or bodysnatched if I ever mix up usage of “lie” and “lay”.
You all will know I have been kidnapped or bodysnatched if I ever use the phrase I could care less.
You all will know I have been kidnapped or bodysnatched if I ever use the word epistemological.

After decades of procrastination, I am reading Charlotte Bronte's "Vilette". Am about half-way through & enjoying it a lot, despite its occasional oddness. (And I wish my French were better!) Charlotte was so incredibly talented.

Holy cow, have things ever heated-up here since you-know-what! I think it's finally becoming a substantive replacement for you-know-where. What's lacking here, though, is music. So let's listen to something--the title song from The National's astonishing 2017 album.
