Always wanted to fly airplanes when I was a kid, but the adults in my life told me you need perfect vision, which isn’t true. Then 9/11 happened. Then 2008 happened. Then Covid happened. Still managed to make it to the cockpit of a jet after all
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

it's insanely funny for people to be talking like this about New York of all places, the city with a big metal lady in the harbor holding a sign that says "we love immigrants"

This reads less like a plan and more like a velvet rope blocking off areas the donors paid them not to step into
This gets at the core problem the Democrats have right now: Consultants keep telling them to focus on ‘kitchen table issues’ but they don’t have an inspiring kitchen table agenda! ‘Expanding drug price negotiation’ is technocratic and taxing the wealthy is something they refuse to deliver on.
Okay, let's get into the text...

Here are their bullet point recommendations: Talk about the economy! Don't talk about immigrants or climate or "social issues!" Criticize the ultra-wealthy, but in a very-not-socialist sort of way!

This is... just popularism? Didn't we already do this?

It’s like the trolley problem, except in this case on one track there’s your own life and four random billionaires, and on the other there are zero people but if you pull the lever your company ceases to exist and everyone’s mad at you
Oh my god. The scale models kept imploding so he's like "don't worry I have a new manufacturing method that will stop these implosions" and they're like "should we test a scale model built with this new method" and he's like "no no just try it on the real sub I'm sure it'll work"

An interesting range of interpretations here but what jumps out at me most is that sharp economic downturns seem to be associated, with some lag, with the far-right cannibalizing the center-right and thereby threatening democratic systems.

Some implications, perhaps, for democratic system design.
In our - very limited - historical experience of democracy,

(i) states rot from the centre-right
(ii) and it's contagious (via geography/powerful exemplar states)

Gutted at the news that Kaleb Horton is gone. Kaleb was a brilliant writer, of course, but he was also a gifted photographer. Years ago I encouraged him to sell his pieces. His work was so good, I told him, and people should see it.

Here are some of his beautiful shots.

The song "Funiculì, Funiculà" was written in 1880 to advertise the new funicular railway at Vesuvius. Less than a decade later, Richard Strauss used the tune in a symphony assuming it was a traditional folk song, only to be sued by the very much living composer
Basically all Italian pasta recipes go back to a single cookbook in the 1960s. Fondue was invented as a marketing ploy by the Swiss cheese union in the same decade. Sushi was mostly tuna until a Norwegian guy invented salmon sushi to promote salmon exports to Japan in the 1980s
a lot of people who were recording 'traditional festivals' didn't realize that they were constantly being made up/based on popular culture/what the guy doing it thought would be funny

I think this is why aviation is shockingly resistant to the Silicon Valley playbook of creating an illegal service, offloading the liability onto workers, and becoming entrenched before regulators catch on. Of course, someone tried in 2019 but the FAA stomped on them before anyone got Buddy Holly’d
I work with small drones - in the intersection of aviation and AI, in a certain sense - and every day I am grateful that my technological niche is one with at least some carry-over DNA from the pretty damn sane and risk-averse world of aviation.

Right, so all we need is to harvest ~50 million solar masses, transport it all to the solar system, somehow transmute 99.7% of it into carbon, and then invent faster-than-light communication to run it all. Only then will we know for certain how many R’s are in the word “strawberry”
And also - THIS!

Like, it doesn't matter which way in to this problem you come, he gave an idea that doesn't work FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF SCIENCE FICTION.

This is for a system of *DATA PROCESSING CENTERS*. For which milliseconds of lag matter!

Milliseconds!
IMO, round trip comms delay to Neptune being nearly 10 hours is enough to burry this. Don't have to get into logistics or materials or scale. I was more generous, picturing a swarm in near-earth Solar orbit, and it's still a quarter hour delay on average in best case. Unusable for stated purpose.

Shade saves lives. But America has devalued it and destroyed it, both to make space for parking lots and make blocks easier to surveil. Sam Bloch outlines the deadly consequences of such policy in “Shade: The Promise of a Forgotten Natural Resource.”

Increasing shade cover is essential to surviving the next, hotter chapter of urban living. Why are cities so often opposed?

Same reason we don’t have thousands of flying cars crisscrossing San Francisco Bay despite the promises of Silicon Valley and the proliferation of drones. You’re trying to replace helicopter pilots with a machine whose operation also requires the knowledge and expertise of a helicopter pilot
This is the first time I’ve seen these kind of “you don’t know what you don’t know” issues in coding to a degree that I’ve seen them in law, and it’s the same structural issue — when you get down to it, you have to be the kind of expert that the AI promises to replace to be able to use it safely
