being a non-commercial/hobbyist game maker means you'll just come across a lot of commercial game devs debating over and over again on things youve already figured out years ago. some of my best friends are commercial devs (lol) but i cant say i really envy their position... sounds a bit miserable

I think my favorite positive example in this movie is the latest Avatar movie because I fucking hate how those movies look, I hate the overly vibrant sci-fi future videogame aesthetic from the 2000s but like... Nah they do try and make that shit seem tangible?
This is a really remarkable video essay on contemporary film and the theories of Laura Marks. It's making me think about movies in a new way.

The guy from the "Hit it, Joe!" photoplayer meme is starting his own nonprofit to preserve silent cinema technology:

This instrument from the early cinema is disappearing. But not on Joe's watch
Joe Rinaudo is doing everything to ensure his passion for photoplayers, the self-playing pianos that scored silent movies, outlives him even as interest in the instrument has waned for a long time, wi...

any time i see posts about mildly janky or what could be perceived as “player hostile” moments of dungeon crawlers i see most of the replies unanimously either asking for the game name, saying “omg i love this game” or saying “omg i need to play this game”. we need the genre to revive i think

this is literally what all game discussion is like. every single time someone online is presenting some opinion that’s supposed to counteract a “common” opinion it’s always formulated by looking at youtube videos and forum posts from 1 - 2 decades ago
Been laughing at this for about 10 minutes.

we must end the era of Fearful Game Design

I firmly believe it's a self-fulfilling and exacerbating problem. if someone's attention span is so short that at the first sign of needing to think for 2 seconds they stop playing, then fuck em.

this is so cart-before-horse to me. i don't accept that people's attention spans are shorter in a way that has to matter. the problem is that we keep thinking that and "complying in advance" with the imagined boogieman of "people not paying attention nowadays". nothing done in that direction helps
You wanna know why we're having nag line discourse in 2025? Because developers know we're fighting an attention economy war we'll lose no matter what. Players don't read, have TikTok open next to them, god forbid we are scared you miss something and then blame us for not giving you all the info.

a theme lately has been "utter, complete failures at crisis management": here's another one!

if your response to a crisis can be summarized as "we ignored our own policies and a single guy at the top was responsible for overruling an entire unanimous committee" You Might Be Fucking Up, IFPA
Here is the statement by the men running the IFPA.

They are glossing over what happened, imposing meaningless sanctions against the venue alone, and setting up an e-mail address. What a crock of shit. www.ifpapinball.com/ifpa-stateme...

Nostalgia is a tool of fascism and art that leans heavily on pop culture references often has nothing of value to say
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

I agree and this is the only thing that irritates me in Lies of P, a game I otherwise adore. Related: Having a really cool scene followed by a character yelling THAT WAS SO COOL (Control, but also Lies of P)
not letting the player think for a moment and instead just having a character openly verbalize what you're supposed to feel is SO annoying. i'm begging writers and designers to just knock it off.

The song was purchased 3000 times which got it to the #1 spot for "digital download purchases" and has nothing to do with airplay or stream numbers. Someone essentially paid $3k to get press attention, and it worked.
AI is killing more jobs. It's not just the musicians. It's management and booking, road staff, venue staff, and support.

One #1 artist will typically employ at least 50 people. These people aren't millionaires. They work for a living. AI will eliminate their jobs.

I think of Angeline Era's character art as "gestural" vertex colors: big blocks of gradients and hard edges that loosely gesture at finer details. They are often seen very small on the screen, so it helps them not appear over-detailed. But I also think it looks beautiful up close!
