MN--> NC! Urban planner-person ~ transportation, land use, zoning, environment | Usually transportation and specifically Amtrak posting, probably! [also Minnesota sports, sorry] | Opinions are just mine, thanks!
Ah, the argument in this mailer is just the less blatant, more palatably presented version of the idea a St. Paulite once argued on Facebook (I have a screenshot saved, somewhere!) that city residents should “have one vote for every year they’ve lived in the city.” Provincial, exclusionary, etc.
When I moved to Minneapolis in the mid-aughts, it was really difficult to make friends. People from other states didn’t get it.

Now the bias is front and center in my city politics. If I’m a resident who “just got here,” do I matter less to Josh?

I‘ve long felt that Metro Transit should use a modern version of Twin City Rapid Transit‘s late period PCC yellow/green livery, or their classic yellow/green/burgandy-ish color (could sub in blue). Would be so much nicer! MT’s buses especially look so meh (and show dirt) w/so much blank white!
one thing about the test train... it's showing us all what we could have. the yellow/green/blue livery is 1000% better than the white/blue/yellow that we use on the trains and buses.

we change the train colors i bet ridership increases x2.

Shockingly out of touch, callous, and dismissive by Commissioner “NY Liberty“ Engelbert. Especially when reffing arguably played a significant role (even though it wasn’t the only factor) in Collier and the Lynx not winning the title in 2024. Calling Napheesa Collier a “loser” is loser behavior.
Napheesa Collier continued in her statement, saying Cathy Engelbert told Colllier "only losers complain about the refs."

"We go to battle every day to protect a shield for a league that doesn't value us."

Would love to see better attendance for the upcoming Lynx playoff games! Are they still not opening up all the seats? What gives? I feel like Ballhalla tonight was twice as loud & rowdy/boisterous, in the best way, as the Lynx crowd was in Game 1, in addition to being far larger in size!

What's even funnier about Mayor Frey's "playground downtown" focus is that he's been the mayor for 8 yrs and hasn't managed to do basic "wow fun winter playground stuff!" that *used* to exist, like an outdoor ice skating rink (or two!) Locals and tourists enjoy skating! It's "so Minnesota!" And yet!
We’ve tried “playground downtown” for at least three decades. It‘s built on the whims of suburbanites who get spooked every time the downtown establishment shit-talks downtown to get more cops. Again, no pushback because of the bended-knee format. bsky.app/profile/stre...
"What we are looking to the future to see is: Downtown will be more of a playground. It’ll be more of an entertainment district. We need to make sure that it’s not just a place where people are coming into work at 8 a.m. and leaving at 5:30 p.m." www.startribune.com/downtown-min...

Can only echo this. I wouldn't vote for him if I still lived in Minneapolis, but it is SO important that he has actively opposed the transphobia that's all over the internet + media, related to the shooter. Minnesota supports the trans community.
i have my strong disagreements with Mayor Frey, but his statements today have been strong and important. i'd like to thank him for his strong advocacy for gun control and for his statements opposing transphobia

Why is it this that finally made me flat out cry?

(It's a good picture and evocative. Shoes in hand so whoever it is can get to the school faster. No face shown so doesn't feel exploitive. Also I know that street, have parked right there many times.)
Of all the photos posted by the Strib related to the shooting at Annunciation Church, this was the one that got me the most. Maybe because we cant see the (presumably) mom’s face, so it seems more universal? arc.stimg.co/startribunem...?

This story was really touching/tragic/oh my gosh. The kid apparently had broken his arm, then re-injured it last night, causing him to miss school. 2 of his friends apparently among injured, so he very well would have been at risk. He made a paper airplane with one hand and gave it to Corin Hoggard😭
FOX9 reporter telling the story of a child who missed school today because he had a broken arm. But he came to the school to give the reporter a paper airplane he made to thank him for being there to cover the story.

As a Minnesotan not living in MN, my heart is once again torn apart by what’s happened there today. I can offer these photos of the stunning sunset (with rising new crescent moon) in Durham, NC last night as a bit of peace. Thinking of those directly and indirectly affected + everyone in MN.

100% yes. These poor children. "I don't feel safe," said the boy to his father. We've failed this child, all children, & everyone. The StarTribune's photojournalist(s) have captured some especially heartrending images of terrified children & reuniting families, showing the impact of the violence :(
We need to choose. Guns or kids. Guns or humanity. This isn’t some game. There’s real, terrible consequences not just to the kids who are dead.
August 27, 2025 at 3:51 PM
Yes!! Impatience, inattentiveness, etc. can *so* easily turn into violence. The mocking of bicyclists for caring about this is sick. Someone extremely close to me lost a beloved family member due to a careless, lazy, inattentive driver. I was there when they got the news; I’ll never, ever forget. 😣
In addition to "you're so entitled" I really hate how people tell bicyclists we're "overreacting" to the things that drivers do that aren't overtly hostile. I have ridden my bike long enough to know just how quickly impatience can turn into violence. I am well aware of how vulnerable I am.

As much as I may critique MnDOT and things back in Minnesota [because I care about the issues a lot!], here’s a good article on the awful status quo for bike and pedestrian infra funding (and safety) in NC. It’s BAD bad here. Makes MN look like Denmark! NcDOT’s Division of Rail is amazing, though.
A North Carolina law passed in 2013 made it much harder to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists on state roads. The law says state funds can only go to such efforts if they’re part of projects that benefit drivers.
Why a 10-Year-Old Law Blocks Bike Lanes From Getting Off the Ground
North Carolina's local governments and bike advocates want to change a law that keeps the state from funding many bike lanes and sidewalks.

This makes my day; more people are biking to the Minnesota State Fair each year! If the demand keeps increasing maybe they’ll consider adding multilevel racks?! Or even a multilevel partly enclosed storage structure, at least at the Como location?! Not room to keep expanding on 1 level forever!
Some full bike rack inspiration for ya

1/? I see there’s criticism regarding this article. I just spent 4 days in Seattle, a city w/its own homelessness + opioid crisis, & didn’t have one bad transit experience. No smoking/drug use. The trains and buses weren’t dirty & did not smell of various types of smoke, and the ridership was high.
Transit Will Fail Until We Address Homelessness, Opioid Use: https://streets.mn/2025/08/18/transit-will-fail-until-we-address-homelessness/

Metro Transit ridership is up, but it hasn't returned to pre-COVID levels. And it won't on light rail until trains feel safe.
August 20, 2025 at 2:45 AM
To respond to this in another way: It’s very clear that based on my own experiences, the below, housing, transit, and other data, their rail transit buildout and the TDM-type program Mary mentioned in a different post, Seattle has decided it wants to be a city! Minneapolis and St. Paul haven’t.
Seattle has an historically very impressive transit commuter share. They offer great carrots and have legislated big sticks to get people out of their cars. We don't do that in Minneapolis or Saint Paul...we cheerlead for multimodalism and then build shared bike and pedestrian paths on Lyndale Ave

The number of people in Seattle who use light rail to access the airport is really impressive! Also a sad commentary on how few MSP passengers use the Blue Line these days, despite the travel time to downtown being much shorter and more competitive with driving…it should be packed like this train!

Not only is this a very on-brand Pohlad story (read the whole thread!), at the game I attended on Monday, I saw that bottled water at Yankee Stadium also costs $6, in a much more expensive metro. What is this, Jim—New York?!
This man! Jim Pohlad, owner of the Minnesota Twins and 8th richest owner in the MLB! And, seller of $8 soda and $6 bottled water at publicly financed Target Field!

(Also he was driving the Audi because the Pohlad family *also* owns a local Audi dealership.) (5/5)

On one hand, this game includes the poor 2025 Minnesota Twins. On the other hand, baseball on a night like this! ❤️
August 11, 2025 at 11:43 PM
This is important & is probably one factor of the many that’s tamping down Metro Transit’s (MN) ridership. Given that younger people are usually a large part of ridership, this hurts that much more.
Troubling findings in this new UCLA report:

Americans are taking far fewer trips than they did before the pandemic. When they do travel, they've shifted toward driving and away from transit.

Those trends are particularly pronounced among youths 15-29.

So, baseball people: Suggestions on the best moderately-priced sections (especially for opposing fans) to sit at Yankee Stadium? I've read about the places for opposing fans to stay away from, but have heard a mix of opinions on the best sections.

North Carolina Democrats...enormously disappointing. Shocked at some of the awful rhetoric at least one of them used, and now several key (terrible) GOP priorities get passed, only because of them. You'd think that NOW of all times, they'd stick together...nope!

I'm embarrassed to admit I laughed out loud at this😭 Oh those Pohlads and their "business decisions"
Twins ig page looks like their team plane crashed.

By the bye, I haven't been to my annual Twins game this year to keep up my streak. The good news is, since I don't live in MN, I don't have to support the Pohlads to do it. The Bad News? Schedule and location-wise, my current easiest bet is Twins @ Yankees.
I'll bet we'll see creative messages on signs that fans manage to sneak into ballparks, because this is an insult to generations of Twins fans across the upper Midwest. I've been to at least one game a year, not counting 2020, since I was 6, and this just hurts.
Twins trade tally:

Carlos Correa
Jhoan Duran
Griffin Jax
Louis Varland
Brock Stewart
Willi Castro
Harrison Bader
Chris Paddack
Danny Coulombe
Ty France

They traded 40% of the roster, including the five best relievers and five players with 2+ years of team control remaining.
