MN--> NC! Urban planner-person ~ transportation, land use, zoning, environment | Usually transportation and specifically Amtrak posting, probably! [also Minnesota sports, sorry] | Opinions are just mine, thanks!
Looks like it covers a fair swath of residential areas beyond the park and ride, in addition to schools, libraries, etc.?

As a Minnesotan not living in MN, my heart is once again torn apart by what’s happened there today. I can offer these photos of the stunning sunset (with rising new crescent moon) in Durham, NC last night as a bit of peace. Thinking of those directly and indirectly affected + everyone in MN.

On one hand, this game includes the poor 2025 Minnesota Twins. On the other hand, baseball on a night like this! ❤️

The S. St. Paul Monorail owners proposed a connection to downtown St. Paul, but that never happened. The company (Enos Electric Railway of NJ) also proposed a line connecting Minneapolis and St. Paul, as shown in this fanciful rendering! Would've been a sight to see if it'd happened!

For something completely different: One of the few photographs of the famous, very short-lived (as in, several months) South St. Paul (MN) Monorail, shown in 1886-'87. A demonstration line, it was only 1,260 ft long & went to the top of the river bluff along Bryant Ave.

The housing loss--in Black neighborhoods as well as in some of Minneapolis' denser near-downtown apartment neighborhoods (more mixed)--was/is staggering. This entire block (1938 aerial) was completely obliterated for I-94. A few hundred units for sure given the number of small apartment buildings.

For something not the news: Amtrak Piedmont train #74 departs downtown Durham on a sunny day in late March, heading to its final stops at Cary and Raleigh, NC! TONS of passengers boarded—looked to be over 100. Happened to have my phone with me on a run and couldn’t resist watching and recording.

“Say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here!” #HandsOff Raleigh, NC. Refugees are welcome! Asylum seekers are welcome! Students who write op-eds are welcome! Down with the musk-trump takeover!

#Handsoff Raleigh! North Carolinians have HAD it! Great crowd. This shows the central portions (but not all) of the protest. Really impressive energy all around! I liked the “fire musk, save Elmo” sign. This was almost 1.5 hrs into the protest on a hot day so some had left already, too.

Sen. Tills does *not have* a spine! One of my favorite signs.

Outstanding turnout for #HandsOff in Raleigh! Zoom in on this pic to get a sense of how packed it was in the central area. Organizers said 10,000—that may be high but I’d say at least over 5,000 in total! Protest was dispersed on the mall + multiple city blocks so hard to get a full picture.

Everything I've seen from the construction update emails + this map on the website (metrocouncil.org/Transportati...) indicate "2025" for all the remaining trails to open. We'll see!

And when they compiled the overall sentiment from the survey towards moving buses off Nicollet, it was overwhelmingly neutral to negative! Very negative! Almost a comical lack of support from transit riders.
March 20, 2025 at 10:02 PM
You have to be kidding me. The survey responses were THIS overwhelmingly negative towards moving buses off Nicollet in the online survey alone, and they're STILL trying to move ahead with this by 2026?! @hpan3.bsky.social I will put out my hope feelers on you writing about the disconnect here

From last week: Paralleling the Lynx Blue Line (hello Siemens S70!) on the way out of Charlotte, NC. Amtrak Piedmont train 72, complete with seemingly improved wifi and comfy seats as always!

Tonight I learned: During the heyday of Twin City Lines running steamboat service on Lake Minnetonka, there was for a brief time a TCRT employee had the epic title of Commodore of the Fleet, who (naturally) was in charge of coordinating the steamboat operations. There were 4 routes in total!

Pregame genuine excitement levels + general noise levels in the Spectrum Center tonight are at like 2010-2011 Target Center levels; I feel the pain of Hornets fans! Loud cheers for Naz and honestly anytime the T-wolves do anything good! So many empty seats
March 6, 2025 at 12:25 AM
Was a great turnout! Glad to see people taking the time to be in community like this!

Much better vibes than other things going on: Mardi Gras celebrations in downtown Durham, NC earlier tonight! Also an example of biking serendipity because I only encountered the fun because I’d just picked up my bike from the shop and decided to bike around on a warm evening❤️

Here it is: your moment of zen. From a bit over a week ago, after we received a light snowfall here in NC and things were nice and frozenish for a bit😃 Sound up to hear the babbling creek!
February 1, 2025 at 5:47 PM
Your train moment of zen for today! Piedmont 72 arriving at Durham, NC. North Carolina’s Amtrak-operated, state-run Piedmont & Carolinian services are some of the most successful in the nation, with record ridership for several years in a row. NC is looking to add a 5th Piedmont in a few years!
January 26, 2025 at 6:18 PM
It gets worse-Quid pro quo! "Once buses are moved off Nicollet Mall, what improvements do you like to see." ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Many of these things already exist/happen; 3 of the new things could happen today! Also galling to see public restrooms on there as an option only once transit riders gone
January 10, 2025 at 2:14 AM
I'm sincerely sorry, but in addition to seeing no clear promises of *how* transit service would materially, holistically IMPROVE for regular riders, it is an indictment of a certain American mentality that moving 1,000s of transit riders OFF a major street is meant to *improve* (buzzword) vibrancy!

@lollardfish.bsky.social Received it a few days ago, and and am pumped to jump learn tons about a part of history that I know very little about today! Keep on writing!
