My hot take on this is Marvel and Star Wars do so well because they are made to sell toys to children. The plot and world building is really not much worse than early entries in these franchises. But there is no childhood nostalgia from playing Na'vi. Long time between release doesn't help.
i don’t think everyone needs to like every film but the way people refuse to even take the avatar series seriously in any capacity feels so performative in a way no other series has ever been treated, very odd to me

Driving is more of a protected right in this country than fair trials, reproductive choice, or protest.
again, ignition interlocks are one of those things where there basically *really is* a technological solution to the problem that greatly mitigates that tradeoffs, and it's a policy failure that they aren't mandatory for five years after your first DUI.

Nah. Commercials are the worst. Watched "normal" TV with my parents the other day and it was painful. A lot more things to be nostalgic for than pharma and injury law ads.
I'm gonna say something controversial but... I miss cable. I miss being able to put a channel on the TV and have it change shows. Even the commercials for some reason I miss. Like im missing out on society.

This is so clearly the case with free school lunch. We make and waste so much food in this country. Providing it for free at a public school is cheap, efficient, and well worth the investment. And yet....conservativism is built entirely on free lunch being the most evil thing a government can do.
It's interesting that wise conservative business guys implicitly understand "return on investment" except when it comes to this. It's better for YOU if your neighbor gets enough to eat so he can become your community's mechanic, accountant, dentist--whatever!--instead of lying dead in a ditch
The welfare state is about dignity, equality, and making people not poor, but as @itsafronomics.bsky.social says/cites here, it’s often also an investment that more than pays for itself
