When I moved to NZ in 2007 I didn't really think about who I'd meet here but I suppose I expected it to be mostly Kiwis. It has been a nice surprise to find myself surrounded by Kiwi friends but also all kinds of internationals!

AI is *so* unreliable. I don't know why I keep trying. I asked Anthropic Claude to help me come up with some ideas for my upcoming NZ road trip and it confidently suggested a stay at the Kura Tawhiti DOC campsite and told me all about it. The only problem? The campsite is an AI hallucination.
"Kura Tawhiti/Castle Hill DOC Campsite Location & Access Located about 90km from Christchurch (1.5 hours drive) on State Highway 73 towards Arthur's Pass. The limestone rock formations are right beside the highway, and the campsite is just off the road - very easy access in your Aqua, no challenging roads at all. The Setting This is one of the most unique camping spots in Canterbury. You're camping literally among giant limestone boulders and rock formations that are millions of years old. The landscape is otherworldly - think huge weathered rocks creating caves, arches, and formations scattered across tussock grassland with mountain views in the background. Why it's special: Incredibly photogenic at all times of day, but especially sunrise and golden hour The rocks create a sense of shelter and privacy despite being an open landscape It's a spiritual site for Ngāi Tahu - there's a profound sense of peace here Popular with rock climbers (bouldering), so you might see people but it rarely feels crowded The Southern Alps backdrop is stunning Campsite Facilities Basic but adequate: Toilet (long-drop style) Water available (should be treated) Flat tent sites among the rocks Some sites quite sheltered from wind by the boulders No showers, no power $8 per adult per night (as of my knowledge) Important notes: Can be VERY windy - the rocks help but bring good tent pegs and guy ropes Gets cold at night even in summer (it's 700m elevation) - bring warm sleeping bag Exposed to weather - check forecast Not much shade in summer heat" ALL LIES This campsite does not exist. Kura Tawhiti does but the "flat tent sites among the rocks" option for $8/night absolutely does not.

The monarch caterpillar population in my garden has reached a level that is clearly unsustainable by my poor swan plants, which will probably be nowt but bare stems by tomorrow, but aren't they gorgeous?
A swan plant absolutely riddled with monarch caterpillars, ranging from quite large to so small I can barely see them. The entire plant is just writhing with boldly striped squirmers. Om nom nom

I'm fighting a losing battle to get Anthropic Claude AI to stop fabricating "evidence" to back up what it's telling me. I gave it explicit instructions which it repeatedly fails to follow. I asked it why, and it said it can't stop itself.

Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing? 2? Questions I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up. Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?
