Every summer I am an un-sun-safe idiot at least once and today was that day for summer 25-26. The New Plymouth coastal walkway is beautiful but it is very long and very unshaded and I am now somewhat lobsterised on my shoulders and the backs of my knees 🟥

I see the pink tax is alive and well at Sea Bands, where women get to pay extra for the privilege of a colour that isn't dark grey and so, I must assume, works better for their gender somehow?
Two sets of Seabands, apparently identical except that one is pink, aimed at "mama"s, and is quite a bit more expensive.

Clear signs of cost-cutting at the Christchurch City Council: the latest "attagirl" gold stars for properly sorting the contents of the recycling bin are actually a dull green. That's not nearly as motivational!

Madi tries to look out a frosted over window “it’s January 18th and I have to head into Minneapolis for a comic show. I’m regretting this choice almost as soon as I wake up. It’s so cold that my windows have frosted over and I can’t see out of them. When I check my app it says it’s about -5 degrees f “ Madi drives with the heat blasting “ I bundle up in as many layers as I have. Double scarves, winter gloves and wool lined boots. I clear frost off the car in record time, it takes me seconds, not minutes. Even so, my fingers are numb before I even get into my car, it takes 15 minutes with the heat blasting before I can feel them again” Madi trudges through the snow “I don’t have to walk terribly far after I park. But the snow is needed like and painful. By the time I get to the door I’m crying and snotty.” Madi is crying Madi looks at her phone, a man is being dragged by ice from his home wearing nothing but a short blanket hastily covering his shoulders but not his chest or legs, boxers, and crocs “ I finally get home and check into the news. Immediately I see a photo of a man not far from me who was taken from his home by ice today. They didn’t let him out on any clothes before dragging him out into the cold. And I think about frosted windows, numb fingers, and needle like snow”

I'm heading north in a couple of weeks but have been holding off on specific destinations, because the long-range weather forecast issued months ago said that late summer would be very wet at the top of the North Island. That has definitely come to pass ☹️

A red knitted cap with a pointed crown with a braided tassel. It's titled "Melt the ICE Hat" and it's by YarnCultMN n the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design. The sample shown was knit in Blue Sky Fibers Skyland for the DK version. All proceeds from the sale of this pattern go to the LynLake community of businesses who will distribute the funds to those impacted by the actions of ICE.

I took myself off to Orana Wildlife Park today to see what might be hanging about therein. I've only been there once before (what can I say, the far side of Christchurch is just far enough away to be inconvenient) and it was raining that time, so it was nice to visit again in sunshine today.
A couple of lions just hanging about. Lemurs, one of whom has the visibly relaxed vibe I wish to cultivate for myself. A spider monkey climbs a wooden beam with no care for modesty whatsoEVER. A meerkat stands guard against... whatever might be nearby I guess. Mostly tourists.

I can't imagine what would compel me to even transit through the USA at the moment, let alone plan a visit there. It's an amazingly varied country full of great reasons to visit but currently with much better reasons to steer well clear.
