Yep. I was talking to someone recently and they reckon the kids all find the generative AI producing things from stolen creative work to be pretty gross too and they don't want anything to do with it. That gives me hope.

Sounds about right. It can't even work a calendar properly. Even when I give it something with a clear timestamp and tell it the current date it'll confidently assure me that something has already happened in the future 🙄

It has a few styles to choose from but they're all going to be a variety of the same unreliable nonsense under the hood for this sort of fact/"fact"-based response.

Yes it certainly might be, although it does align with what I know about how these things are designed. They go for "what is likely to be a satisfactory response based on averages and patterns" rather than "what is known to be true".

My friend circle in Ōtautahi includes Kiwis, Irish, English, Welsh, American, German, Argentinian, Finnish, Malaysian, Filipino, and probably others that I'm forgetting. I genuinely think that's so cool. It's down to where I've worked rather than anything I've done on purpose but I still like it.

Can you quickly throw together muffins, colour in while they are cooling, then have a muffin and a cuppa as a reward? That's what I'd do 😆

Here is the explanation for the internal logic that shows why we absolutely cannot rely on Claude or any AI tool to give reliable answers.

To be clear, Kura Tawhiti does exist, but there is no campsite there now and I don't remember one ever being there. I think camping among the boulders would be culturally inappropriate since it is seen as a spiritual site.

I wonder how many people are using it to plan trips around NZ and getting a horrible shock when they realise their agenda isn't just unrealistic in the time they have (a common problem for overseas visitors) but is literally impossible because the facilities were never there to begin with.

Do take it gently Cath. You will be exhausted for a while I'm sure. These past weeks and months have been ongoing stress for you and now you have a different life and loss to adjust to. That takes a huge amount of energy just to get through.

Funnily enough this is in today's news in NZ. It's from an earlier period but part of the same terrible mindset.

'You can look but don’t touch': This 'abusive' matron took newborns and gave them away
A new investigation has found a matron who ran a home for unwed mothers in Auckland was “almost obsessively controlling” and abusive.

I do remember the Kerry babies! In my home that would have been treated as a moral lesson. I grew up in an environment that blamed girls for not keeping their legs closed then blamed them for not asking for help while at the same time making real help almost impossible to access. You know the drill.

I don't remember hearing about her at the time at all. Maybe I was a bit too young. No doubt my parents would have used it as an excuse to remind me that God didn't want me having pre-marital sex and I could expect dire consequences from such behaviour, anyway 🙄

Get away from me you temptress 😂
I blew all my sock budget on Creepers (toe socks for running/tramping) recently so I really can't. No money left AND no space left in sock drawer.

I discovered when using the phrase "we're suckin' diesel" in New Zealand that nobody around me in New Zealand knows this phrase and it is extremely confusing for them 😂

Oh Cath, I just saw this.
You must be feeling so many emotions at the moment. I'm very sorry for your loss.

I remember trying to take the price tag off the back of a new bra with a bread knife or steak knife or some such sharp object because I didn't have a scissors. I did this while I was wearing the bra. It ended, very predictably, with blood spilt.
