"are Southern whites more racist than other American whites" is like the most tested question of all time in American history and the answer is yes extremely so

up to the Civil War the South was an internal Cold War with the North that frequently became violent well before 1861. Its voracious need for slaves was a prominent contributor to early US imperialism in foreign policy....
I understand why some white liberals from the Deep South want to insist that there isn't something distinct (and bad) about Southern political culture but the problem with this is that we wouldn't even have this idea of "The South" as distinct from the rest of the US if there wasn't a there there

Put differently: If you look at a group of voters with the same education, their level of racial resentment strongly predicts their vote choice. But in a group with the same level of racial resentment, educational attainment does not allow for a strong prediction of their politics.

I get why it happens but goddamn do I wish anything could hit as hard on the timeline as something that sucks that everyone hates written by or about the worst person you know. I wish something good or interesting was able to get anywhere near the traction some shit that sucks does.

"sympathy for some of the GOP's voters but contempt for their elected and appointed leaders" is the proper position for dem electeds, and instead we get "sympathy for GOP elected and appointed leaders, but contempt for ~Dem~ voters" it's truly insane fuck all these assholes

I consider myself a prison abolitionist despite the very real and material challenges of that position. It's not a practical one day-to-day policy slate, but an anchor on a longer-term project not possible in the current context, contingent on social changes that are wildly unlikely in my lifetime.
I‘m tired of being nice about this; “abolitionism” has had years to develop a non-idiot policy program and the best they’ve come up with is ”murder without even the pretense of juridical process.” And I am not nut-picking; this is all over abolitionist writing.
"What about [form of abuse that is mostly de facto decriminalised right now anyway]?"

I didn't say abolish bullets, did I?

This is, quite literally, the concluding chapter from years of vice signaling as politics. There is no better evidence for how putting Trump, a charlatan and moral void, at the center of our politics for a decade has resulted in the literal rotting of the soul and character this nation.

i don't think that bush v. gore is the *worst* ruling in the history of the supreme court, but i do think it is the most openly *corrupt* ruling in its history. a real disgrace.

I did my job. And then I did a job that never should have been my responsibility afterwards, sending emails and having meetings about how this was allowed to happen in the first place. Other women scholars had to spend their time explaining to Aspen leadership why this was not ok.
