So, SFWA is very much not my circus, not my monkeys, but here are my two general thoughts right now:

1) clear rules excluding AI-created content are important to hold the line, especially for publishers who would want nothing more than to toss their editors into the drink.

Pretty sure that when the writing community fights against AI in an award's eligibility, they do NOT mean that scientific models are bad, and they do NOT mean that using spell check will disqualify a work. I'm frankly as baffled by these arguments as I am by the original AI-inclusive award criteria.

Honestly, though, begs the question... why did this even occur? Everyone involved should be fired or quit or whatever the process is. I'm not actually thankful they rescinded it so much as wanting accountability for why it even happened in the first place.

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association AMENDED RULES for the Nebula Awards Dear Meghan, Earlier today, you received an email titled, “Note from the Board on This Year’s Nebula Rules.” To be clear, SFWA does not support the use of LLM generative models in the production of creative work. The Nebula Award Rules did not reflect our current policy and deeply held beliefs and values, and they were amended to reflect that. With further input, today, we made an important change to the Nebula Awards Rules in two board votes that we would like to share with you: Previous Text: "Works that are wholly written using generative large language model (LLM) tools are not eligible." New Text: "Works that are written, either wholly or partially, by generative large language model (LLM) tools are not eligible." -and- Previous Text: "Works that used LLMs at any point during the writing process must disclose this upon acceptance of the nomination, and the nature of the technology’s use will be made clear to voters on the final ballot" New Text: "Works that used LLMs at any point during the writing process must disclose this upon acceptance of the nomination, and those works will be disqualified." We will update our posted rules in the coming days to reflect this change.

This ain't it, SFWA. By allowing LLM tools "at any point during the writing process" you are allowing verified social, ecological, and individual harms to be part of the Nebula Awards. Shame on you.

When finalists are contacted, before they appear on the ballot, they will be asked to disclose any LLMs they used in the production of their work. The voters can then decide if they would like to vote for these works.

Look at this beautiful bouquet of allergens 🌿
A bouquet of many different wild grass seed heads on long stems, held out by my hand. Some are feathery, some dangly, some spiky. Some are not really grasses at all — they’re seed heads from a wild flowering plant that the bees love. The joke here is that all of these have been picked from my backyard, which I — with all my chronic health garbage and burnout — have not been able to deal with.

guess I'm built different, every time I'm out trying to see night sky stuff I frequently think about how much light pollution is entirely preventable with just a tiny bit of regulation
