There's also a severe selection on the dependent variable problem with these comparisons. The Times has looked at all the moderates who won elections, but doesn't include the ones who underperformed and lost. This exaggerates the effect size by roughly 2x. Great coverage in LAist of the two big press rights rulings in 24 hours against DHS and LAPD, plus protester protections.

My quote: “LAPD has failed to police itself for 25 years. Elected officials have failed to police LAPD too. Finally a federal judge has stepped in to do their job for them.”

This major new study from @utrechtuniversity.bsky.social has global implications, so it would be good to see it getting global media coverage rather than only a few Dutch outlets.

That’s not how economics work. The country has to pay its debts, or people stop lending money to the treasury. If they stop lending us money, the economy collapses.
But if instead of being used solely to pay interest on the national debt your obscene wealth was invested in infrastructure, education and otherwise redistributed to the public as a whole the amount of economic activity it would generate would massively benefit everyone.

We are turning Earth into a unlivable Hot House Earth
Earth was about 2.65 degrees Fahrenheit (or about 1.47 degrees Celsius) warmer in 2024 than in the late 19th-century (1850-1900) preindustrial average.

The 10 most recent years are the warmest on record.

Ex-farm worker here.

We need to talk about this whole "But a living wage for farm workers would spike the cost of food!" thing.

Not true AT ALL.

Y'all don't understand how fast experienced farm workers are.

The average tomato picker pulls 650lbs per hour.

At $20/hr, that's $0.03/lb for labor.

I'm afraid you are right: all aspects of our research, healthcare, and public health systems will suffer for the next several years. People will die unnecessarily. Smart people will leave (or never enter) the field. It's a really dark time...🤦
America Is Sliding Into the Abyss
Our science and health infrastructure lies in tatters. Once-dead viruses are roaring back to life. Many people will die. In other words, we’ve reached the point of no return.
