I have seen many shutdowns as a a federal employee, instigated by both parties for: the cancellation of ACA, building "The Wall", protecting DACA, and (now) extending ACA subsidies. In no case has the party that pushed for it achieved its goal. There is a difference between goals and (bad) tactics.

my emergency fund is gone, this week I had to pull the last money out of the kids' savings accounts. Next step is loans.
Even if we open tomorrow, I'll not be spending normally again for a couple of years until I build up a huge emergency fund because this shit is gonna happen again.
