@rutgerbregman.com I just finished reading Moral Ambition for the second time and congratulations is not enough. I’m finishing my Master’s Degree in International Development & Public Policy and don’t want to “waste my talent”. Is it all possible for us to chat in the near future?

Imagine waking up and the first thing you say, the first thing you think of, is “I’m going to defeat the left”.
Watters: What is it like being married to Stephen Miller?

Miller: He's an incredibly inspiring man who gets me going in the morning with his speeches being like let's start the day, I'm going to defeat the left and we are going to win.

What a disappointing last few months for Pete Buttigieg, one of my favourites in the 2020 Dem field. I hope these kind of takes are not forgotten in 2028.

Gun violence is out of control. The victims of gun violence are Republicans, Democrats, independents, and kids, who have no political affiliation whatsoever.

We need to tone down the incendiary political rhetoric, for sure, but we also need to do something about guns.
The guns!

decades' worth of political science/public opinion research shows that what voters care about is informed by what leaders of their preferred party talk about, which also drives media coverage. this is how random conspiracy theory shit from the Fox News cinematic universe ends up in public discourse.
If you’re mad about Dems avoiding talking about DC, you can blame the Democratic quants, as demonstrated in this memo from David Shor’s Blue Rose Research

We’re 8 months in to Trump’s term, and the official administration position is that all good things are because of Trump and all bad things are because of Biden and Obama.

This shit would embarrass Orwell.

Does anyone remember? “Day one in office I will lower prices for everyone.” ~ Donald J Trump
BRENNAN: I was asking you about consumer prices & what people will pay when they go to the store

LUTNICK: They'll be shockingly low

BRENNAN: But The CPI doesn't currently reflect that. The trend is to higher prices

LUTNICK: What did it go up, a tenth of a percent?

BRENNAN: Two tenths on the core

If you're a politician / pundit / consultant / etc, and this surprises you, perhaps reconsider your belief that the algorithmically manipulated feeds you get on X & Facebook are more informative and more representative of the population than BlueSky.

Just sayin'.
per a new CBS News poll, public opinion on immigration has flipped. people now mostly think that trump’s deportation agenda is going too far

One of the most diverse countries in the world is now ruled by a regime which considers not being white suspicious. 🤯

If you’re not white, or you have friends or loved ones who aren’t white, or you’re not a total sociopath and therefore care about fellow humans who aren’t white, you need to understand this regime thinks not being white is inherently suspect, and lots of your fellow Americans are fine with that.

I think the great divider in modern human society is the people who desire very little control over their lives and those who do. The biggest problem is the people in the former column insist they're in the latter, which makes them unbelievable marks.
I am constantly experimenting with LLMs — Claude, Perplexity, ChatGPT. So I feel I have a pretty solid basis on which to say that all of this is idiotic. If you do any of this you are a rube.

one of the stranger phenomena in American life is that hate is supposed to flow in one direction (rural people get to hate urban people, Republicans get to hate Democrats) and if the hate goes the other way people pretend as if this is very upsetting.
The media made a HUGE deal out of "basket of deplorables" and "cling to their guns or religion."

But, of course, it will totally ignore Trump saying he hates Democrats: "I hate them. I believe they hate their country."
in addition to his "shylocks" comment, i can't imagine the media backlash if Biden said anything like from this screenshot - that he "hates Republicans" - and i'm also tired of having this "IMAGINE IF BIDEN!" thought experiment but it's just a constant reminder of the double standards

The treatment of the TikTok ban might seem silly, but it is, effectively, a sign that the constitutional government we have operated under for more than 200 years is no longer in effect.

Read the thread.
NEW: In letters to companies with app stores, AG Pam Bondi purported to be "irrevocably relinquishing any claims" against them — Apple, plus Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and T-Mobile — for violating the TikTok ban. This is so, per Bondi, b/c Trump said it's OK, despite contrary language in the law.
