In 2019 it was designated a municipal historic structure and closed entirely on Nov. 30 2020. Today, the Southern Chiefs Organization, representing 32 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations, is redeveloping the it as the Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn including housing, health services, and cultural spaces.

Opening on Nov. 18, 1926, the Hudson's Bay building in downtown Winnipeg is an enduring landmark in the city. Designed by architect Ernest Isbell Barott as a flagship department store, it was built to compete with the T. Eaton's department store (demolished in 2002).
