There is a deep fragility here, this characterizing arguments that one does not find convincing or agreeable as efforts at suppression. Or, in an old school foucauldian sense, they betray what they desire when they supposedly argue against it.

I would be very surprised if people didn’t know a whole lot more about those histories and the figures associated with them than 15 years ago. What we are in the midst of is a reckoning and learning, and that is miles away concealing it.

They might be efforts that some people, including those names here, disagree with. But locating the challenges to the public narratives of Canadian history as activist suppression does a massive disservice to careful research and discussion.

There is a lot to be said about this take, but let me begin with the claim that these are “activist efforts to conceal” certain histories. Why can’t they be acknowledged as efforts to address these histories, squarely and openly? www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

I’m a former Wolseley school parent and while I voted for a different option, I’m happy to have participated in a deliberative, open process that has chosen a new name that speaks to this place and the future we’re hoping for.
In Winnipeg, a school's name that was a reminder of colonial connections will be renamed to reflect the land instead.

The Wolseley School will be renamed Little Bluestem School for the next school year.

Yes. If you start with GenAi, you need to verify and check what it spits out, and that’s hard if you don’t know much to start with. All these tools are oversold and hyped, and they offer much more than they deliver, and people learning how to research are the ones who are the most short changed.
It also robs students of learning *how* to research.

And renouncing US citizenship isn’t easy or cheap.

I’ve lived in the wake of the Montreal massacre for more than three decades, and it still catches me short when 6 December comes around. I wish these women were still here, and I’m grateful for the work that is done to honour them and call out the violence & misogyny that took their lives.

The desperate hands of the global south seek to take back an overheated world. Seriously, what's next? The McHamburglar trophy in gourmet cooking? The Pol Pot Human Rights medal? The Jeffrey Epstein childcare grant? The Vladimir Putin democracy fellowship? The Weinstein-Cosby feminism prize?

UMP is thrilled to share that @choicereviews.bsky.social has recognized MANOMIN as an Outstanding Academic Title of 2025! This prestigious list reflects the best scholarly titles reviewed by Choice in 2025. Congrats to Brittany Luby, the Niisaachewan Anishinaabe Nation, and the whole Manomin team!

There are no surprises with the Charter - we know what it says, and we know the political work it has done justifying colonialism and imperialism. I want to know about the other material on the auction block, and there is still no public catalogue.

Hoo Boy, the monopoly theme just keeps giving!

How come nobody has written about the bathing in the fur trade?

Nothing like a good old historian thread!
Historian of eugenics here. I don't normally like to retweet bad arguments, but this is such a fundamental misunderstanding of eugenics, I think it's important to point out. I don't have time to debunk all of the ways this is inaccurate, but I'll highlight a few things and then recommend some books🧵
