We are the archives of the University of Winnipeg and its founding colleges dating back to 1871.
A challenging aspect of media preservation is all of the different formats! A great example comes from the Kern-Hill Furniture Co-op fonds. This Manitoban furniture company became locally famous from its commercials recorded on Umatic and Betacam cassettes - www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

Another surprise from the UW Yearbooks, this time from the volume covering the 1977-1978 academic year. This page covers updates from a student group called the Epiglottis Fraternity.

At the UW Archives we have tools to help provide access to older formats like VHS. This old equipment though requires careful handling just like the records.

You can learn more about handling and rules in the reading on our website - archives.uwinnipeg.ca/using-the-ar....

Happy New Years Eve! Its time to celebrate the successes of the past year while looking toward the next. Maybe even attend a swanky party like Claude Turner and his Orchestra, who performed at Fort Garry Hotel as 1942 turned to 1943.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

While there are less lights this season as the City replaces street-lighting, big holiday displays have been in Winnipeg since 1929. Displays were put up off-and-on during the Great Depression and World War 2, with an official lighting program beginning in 1956.

Do you know the history of UW's favourite hangout spot, Tony's?

Named after Tony Kozyra, who ran the canteen until his passing in 1965, it served as a busy meeting place for students, staff, and faculty. Tony's remained a fixture on campus until its closure in 2007.

The UW yearbooks are a great source of info about different organizations on campus, including these pages in the 1981 VOX about the CKUW radio station!

Beginning as CJUC in 1963 under David Shilliday and Ron Riddell, the station operated as a closed circuit broadcast across campus.

Today marks the end of the Fall 2025 term!

Its important to prepare for exams and finish any final projects, but remember to take a well deserved break afterward. Although, its too cold to relax on the campus lawn like these 1931 students after their exams.
