The leaves of Woolly Groundsel are covered with a dense mat of long woolly hairs, giving them a greyish-green appearance. It grows on dry prairie slopes, and was named after famous Canadian botanist John Packer, who was a professor at the @https://ualberta.bsky.social. #WildflowerWednesday

#DYK that Métis politician Louis Riel is often called the founding father of Manitoba? Born in St. Boniface, MB, Riel led the Métis Resistance, formed a provisional government, and drafted a List of Rights that formed the basis for the Manitoba Bill when the province entered Confederation in 1870.

Did you know that Sir James Douglas, former Governor of BC, was a mixed-race man? Born in 1803 to a Scottish father and a free woman of Creole ancestry, he began work in the Canadian fur trade at age 16. By 18, he ran his own post and eventually he was responsible for all of Vancouver Island. #BHM

This 1926 Canadian passport belonged to James Ephraim, who was born in Georgetown, British Guiana (now Guyana). He was a railway employee based in Winnipeg. Men such as John Arthur Robinson worked to establish a union for black trainmen, who had been excluded from existing railwaymen unions. #BHM

Although the berries of Canada Gooseberry are edible, they can be quite tart if picked too early. When ripe, the berries turn colour from green to reddish purple or black. Animals like bears and birds also like to eat the berries, so you may have some competition for them! #WildflowerWednesday
