Our palaeontology field team recently had the help of a helicopter to lift a huge block of ancient sea floor! These rock layers formed some 450 million years ago in a vast sea that covered Manitoba. With the block now at the Museum, it's ready for preparation for research and display. #FossilFriday

The Manitoba Museum will be closed on Remembrance Day, November 11.

Does your bountiful moustache get in the way of your enjoyment of hot beverages? Meet the moustache cup! Invented by Harvey Adams, an English potter, in the mid-1800s, it allowed a Victorian gentleman to drink his beverage while protecting his well-groomed moustache from the liquid.

The Marsh Bellflower grows in wet habitats, like meadows, marshes, and streamsides. The thin leaves have hooked hairs to help this plant climb up other plants to reach more light. Its tiny, white, bell-shaped flowers can be hard to find among the lush vegetation where it grows. #WildflowerWednesday

Museum colleagues discovered a completely white wood frog ("Boreorana sylvatica") in a pond just outside of Winnipeg! This is the first record of a white individual of this species anywhere in North America. The white wood frog was likely a female as it was found mating with a normal-coloured male.

Velma Gertrude McCullough wore this nursing uniform during WWII. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Misericordia Hospital in 1940 and enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corps in 1942. She was sent to England with #5 Canadian General Hospital in London, and to North Africa and Italy.
Blue silk crepe tunic with white cuffs and collar and brass buttons, worn with a long blue silk crepe skirt. Over the main garments is a white pinafore or apron with two front pockets. Uniform includes a brown leather belt with gold-coloured buckle around the waist and two ribbon bars worn on the chest.

Manitoba Museum Student Associate and Mitacs Fellow Urgon Snider’s Master’s thesis research is on microfossils. He’ll be working dissolving ancient rocks, extracting tiny fossils, and mounting them for our collections, expanding our understanding of 450-million-year-old ecosystems! #FossilFriday

Manitoba has over 1,700 species of wildflowers, ferns, shrubs and trees, but identifying them is not easy. For two decades, staff at the Museum, with a team of volunteer botanists, have been working on an updated edition of Manitoba Flora.

Early Meadow-rue is one of the rarer species of meadow-rue’s in Manitoba, being found only in the southeast. Unlike most wildflowers, this species produces separate male and female plants. As the flowers are wind-pollinated, they are unscented and lack colorful petals. #WildflowerWednesday

Wetland ecologist Grace Barthelmess visited the Manitoba Museum to sample the whiskers of predators in our collection from the Prairie Pothole region. With isotopic data from these specimens, they will be able to shed light on which Prairie Pothole predators have more waterfowl eggs in their diets.
Muskrat study skins are laid out on a piece of white foam. Tweezers are being used to pluck a whisker from one of the muskrat skins. Small, numbered vials, in a variety of colours, are being held in a gloved hand. These vials are used to hold the whiskers until they can be analyzed for isotope content.

This novelty box was made by Sarah Jane Brigden circa 1880. Creativity and crafting ran in Sarah's family, as her mother was known for making ornaments with shells and cones, winning prizes at fairs. Her daughter was social reformer, feminist, and activist Beatrice Bridgen. #WomensHistoryMonth
