In some ways this is a useful reminder that a lot of the talk of European security guarantees to Ukraine have the whole thing backwards. For more than three years Ukraine has been guaranteeing European security by fighting and degrading the Russian armed forces.

How long Britain could really fight for if war broke out tomorrow
In the event of a war, one expert suggests the British Army could be incapable of fighting effectively on land within weeks, once committed - though 'much depends on the form of the conflict'.

Personally, I don’t think that’s possible without the eurozone countries agreeing to issue Eurobonds & they become comfortable with running trade deficits.

🚨BREAKING: The last journalists working for AFP in Gaza have said they can no longer work for the news agency.

They are out of energy and they are starving to death.

I have never seen a statement from a news organisation like it.

Police departments have exponentially more control over how officers are recruited, trained, and overseen than a protest does over its participants, but are allowed by a sympathetic press to use the "bad apples" defense to separate deeds from goals and institutions in a way protestors often aren't.

I’m beginning to think that the people who claimed to care deeply about academic liberty & freedom of speech on college campuses may not have been entirely honest.

If the US can disregard the most basic of WTO rules with impunity, why should anyone else obey those rules they find irksome? So I am puzzled when people caution against retaliation. It is required, or the whole rules based WTO edifice will eventually collapse. Retaliation is pro-globalisation.

The core argument here is unanswerable. For liberal democratic countries, buying American weapons is a security risk. It must be avoided at all costs.
I mean... holy shit.

Looking at the world right now, looking at what Europe is doing, I think you’d have to be in a state of denial to think that the French didn’t make a wiser long term decision with their force de frappe. I think a British government aiming for strategic security would be looking to rectify this.

We're seeing a lot of very rapid geopolitical and geo-economic thinking going on right now in Europe about what the end of the US alliance means for its security, economy & diplomacy.

I haven't seen any parallel thinking among the US Atlanticist community about what it means for the US.

This is an absurd sentence. Nato is dead. It's like saying the best way for France to strengthen European deterrence is for it to join the Hittite Empire.
“The simplest and quickest way for France to strengthen European deterrence would be for it to join Nato’s NPG to commit its nuclear weapons to collective defence”

Is this really true, if the NPG consults in the context of US strategic forces & plans?
