One reason I don't believe people who say chatbots are the future is that, after years and billions of dollars, advertising algorithms still can't understand that when I have *bought* a thing, that means I don't *need it anymore.*

not to downplay how bad datacenters are (real bad!) but it is a very very important confounding factor that 2020 had the lowest nat gas prices of any year they're evaluating
"Data centers are proliferating in VA and a blind man in [MD] is suddenly contending with sharply higher power bills...It’s an increasingly dramatic ripple effect of the AI boom as energy-hungry data centers...[pull]...households into paying for the digital economy" www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...
AI Data Centers Are Sending Power Bills Soaring
Wholesale electricity costs as much as 267% more than it did five years ago in areas near data centers. That’s being passed on to customers.

the only kind of society that is going to be livable - and perhaps this is already irretrievably out of reach - is going to be one where consistent rules and some general baseline of truth exist and are agreed upon. if that's a pie in the sky fantasy then so is anything else worthwhile

Earlier this month I went to Las Vegas and saw the bleak and lonely AI-managed world of the future at the Consumer Electronics Show. I wrote about that, and other possible futures, and a neat soft-serve machine I'd love to have in my home. defector.com/the-future-i...

well, there isn't and you can't, especially when people who are struggling in spite of the supposedly great economy can connect with each other on the computer. is everyone just gonna keep bashing their head on the same brick wall forever or what
I wish there was a way to make people understand and genuinely, truly believe the objective reality that the single best job market in the last half- century for entry- level workers, young people, and bottom- quintile earners is the one we have right now, today.
Opportunity is in shorter supply than it was for us and our parents, the abilities to take advantage of it is not being as effectively taught, and technology is wrecking people.

We need to be focused on making things better for them. But we can't do that pretending they aren't in a world of hurt.
