On this Trans Day of Remembrance, I think about the countless trans people whose names won't be plastered on infographics because the world was so hostile and violent to them that they felt the need to opt out on their own terms.

Mourn the dead.

their plainly stated goal is to starve forty million people until they get what they want, which is to rip health care away from millions more

that this is too monstrous for most news organizations to tell the truth about does not change the facts
The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

Just to reiterate: you are more likely to die in a car crash in the Portland metro area than you are to have died in any TriMet-related way--on a bus or train, at a stop, or even being hit by a bus or train--in any given year dating back to when the MAX was built.
opb.org OPB @opb.org · Oct 21
On TriMet, calls for police service fell by almost half from 2021 to 2024. Still, when the agency surveyed thousands of riders and non-riders across the Portland metro area last year, only about half the respondents said they’d feel safe riding TriMet.
Portland police rejoin TriMet’s transit police for the first time since 2020
But safety on the public transportation system has remained an issue for some riders and staff.

Trump’s Portland narrative didn’t appear suddenly; it’s more a denouement after powerful interests catastrophized challenges for political gain.Years of oiling the growth machine, even in a city with a progressive reputation, have failed to produce material results for voters.

Here’s some history:
Portlanders mock Trump for calling their city ‘war-ravaged’. But they’re clear-eyed about its problems
Like many American cities, Portland has been struggling to combat rising unaffordability and homelessness

I also hope we don’t forget all the local folks who’ve spent years spreading the “portland is a hellhole” narrative to gain short-term political power and/or social media clout.

They provided ammo to the Trump machine. They fed the false narrative and now the chickens are coming home to roost.

Last week, the city administrator told councilors a law firm will assist after some raised concerns over conflicts of interest.
