The staff is right.

The Post was profitable and break-even when positioned as a tough, national newspaper.

Bezos is murdering it because he’s turned on American democracy.
News: The Washington Post is preparing to slash upwards of 300 staffers, incl sports, metro and foreign desks @nataliekorach.bsky.social reports.

“The newsroom is being punished for absolute incompetence from the owner and publisher,” one staffer told @status.news

Really hard to look at this and all the other examples of bravery and kindness from ordinary people in this moment not think also of the tremendous cowardice exhibited over the past year by some of the richest, most well-protected people in business, media and politics
Let us all have the courage displayed by the residents of Minneapolis.

Nonviolence is, in fact, working. This administration is weaker than it was a year ago. More and more of the public is becoming galvanized against it; its agents are being impeded.
Do you honestly think people in the civil rights movement and other nonviolent movements faced no violence themselves? They practiced nonviolence because it works, because the oppressor wants a shooting war, which is the war it will win
How's your non-violent working Mr Gandhi stancil? They will kill each and everyone of you right if they had the chance and you will still be writing Kumbaya.

Health insurance companies should not compound on our healthcare crisis by weaponizing AI to deny Americans essential care.

Attacking trans rights was never really about "protecting women." That rhetoric was just a convenient way to make cisgender women complicit in their own oppression, and to make cisgender men feel like "good guys" while oppressing cisgender women and people who are trans.
The EEOC has just voted 2-1 to remove the entirety of its employer guidance on sexual harassment because portions of it protected trans people.

This administration is pro sexual harassment while simultaneously claiming they protect women.

They need all protestors to be paid operatives because they cannot abide the possibility that somewhere in the world, people sincerely believe in standing up for others. It isn’t enough that they’ve chased all moral virtue from their own hearts. They want a world where no virtue exists in anyone.
Trump on Renee Good: "When she was shot, there was another woman that was screaming 'Shame. Shame Shame Shame.' So loud. Like a professional opera singer. She was so loud. And so professional. She wasn't a woman that was hurt like, 'Oh my heart is injured.' She was a professional."

You know, many of us said the post 9/11 War on Terror measures were Orwellian bullshit at the time, from DHS to ICE. The Patriot Act was chilling as well.

Some of us objected vociferously. Perhaps we didn't have the mics or the power, but we remember 2001-2005 as a terrible time in this country.

Between Mamdani and Spanberger, the establishment of "instantly repeal all the bullshit the last pig put in place" as Democratic priority #1 for both democratic socialists and ex-CIA types is an extremely heartening development.
The first thing Virginia Spanberger did after being sworn in as Governor of Virginia was repeal Youngkin’s executive order requiring state and local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE.

This is the kind of leadership Democratic governors nationwide should be emulating.

At UVA, it's particularly important that she deposed the board members who played a critical role in deposing the previous president under direct political pressure. These appointments cannot be made non-political; the only question is whether you want to unilaterally disarm (and no, you don't)
On the one hand, this reinforces the treatment of university board members as essentially political appointees.
On the other hand, that is the role they have played. They have ignored faculty and students, especially in UVA, where they conspired with the DOJ to remove the university president.
In addition to pushing out board members at UVA, Virginia's new governor has fired the lead attorneys at VMI and George Mason. Things are happening quickly as political control fully flips to Democrats.
